July 19th saw the opening of The Lion King at a myriad of cinemas around the world.

Donald Glover and Beyoncé star as Simba and Nala in the live-screen adaptation of the Disney animated classic, alongside Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Kani, James Earl Jones, and John Oliver.

Be it the younger generation who were going to see a Disney movie or their parents who were taking them for nostalgia’s sake, the film managed to rack up a hefty sum at the box office.

Over the three day weekend, The Lion King roared to $185 million domestically — breaking the record for the biggest July opening that was previously held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

In addition, it marks the 7th largest opening of all time!

When international figures are taken into account, The Lion King stands at $346 million.

It certainly looks to be the main event like no film was before.
