Two of our favorite childhood cartoons are making a comeback.

The creator of The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends is developing reboots for the animated classics that ran on Cartoon Network.

“The Hanna-Barbera homecoming of Craig [McCracken] was an opportunity we could not pass up,” said Sam Register, president of Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe. “Along with his unparalleled sense of fun and imagination, he’s bringing two of his greatest works in The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends and we are so excited for these characters to be a part of the new legacy taking shape at the studio.”

McCracken, who began his animation career at Hanna-Barbera Cartoons in 1992, has also worked at Disney and Netflix. He directed all six seasons of Foster’s, as well as The Powerpuff Girls Movie which premiered in 2002.

The reboot of The Powerpuff Girls will be similar to the original, focusing on Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup who must use their superpowers to fight crime and the forces of evil all before bedtime. Meanwhile, the Foster’s reboot will be recast as a preschool series with a new cast of preschool-aged imaginary friends.

The CW’s The Powerpuff Girls live-action series is moving on without one of its leads. According to Variety, Chloe Bennet, who was scheduled to play the role of Blossom, made a decision to exit the show.

Reportedly, Bennet dropped out of the project, which is based on the iconic Cartoon Network’s animated series, due to scheduling conflicts. The casting process to find a new actress to play Blossom is expected to start in the fall.

The good news, however, is that Dove Cameron and Yana Perrault are still attached to play Bubbles and Buttercup, respectively. It is unclear whether the rest of the cast, including Donald Faison (Professor Drake Utonium) and Nicholas Podany (Mojo Jojo), are still on board.

The CW originally intended to premiere the series, officially titled Powerpuff, in the fall of 2021. However, the network was forced to delay the show indefinitely after the first pilot “didn’t work.” The project is now being completely reworked, and a new pilot will be shot.

The Cartoon Network’s The Powerpuff Girls run for six seasons between 1998 and 2005. The series was followed by a feature film, anime, and 2016’s reboot that spent three years on the air.

When it was originally announced, Powerpuff was set to feature a somewhat different story compared to the animated show. The live-action series would follow Bubbles, Blossom, and Buttercup as “disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.”

The CW’s pilot of Powerpuff, the live-action series based on the popular Cartoon Network animated show created by Craig McCracken The Powerpuff Girls is being re-shot.

“The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner [Bros. TV] studios,” said The CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz.

“In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board,” he continued.

Powerpuff stars Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, and Donald Faison. The series follows the girls who spent their childhood fighting crime and are now 20-somethings years old
