The National Society of Film Critics has chosen its best film of 2018.

The Rider, Chloe Zhao’s low-budget feature, won to coveted title Saturday. Director Zhao was a runner-up in the best director category.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the top prize of best picture was won by only a few votes —44 votes, compared to the 41 votes that went to Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma. Despite losing out Roma won the most accolades including best director and best cinematography for Cuarón, as well as best foreign film.

The film was inspired by the true story of Brady Jandreauo, a rising rodeo star sidelined because of an accident. Jandreau also starred as the lead, cowboy Brady Blackburn.

First Reformed‘s Ethan Hawke and The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman won best actor and best actress, respectively.

The awards season is almost in full swing and the Gotham Independent Film Awards just revealed their list of winners for this year. First Reformed and Eighth Grade led the way, but The Rider managed to score the victory in the main category.

First Reformed collected shiny statues in two categories – Best Actor (Ethan Hawke) and Best Screenplay (Paul Schrader). This religious drama was met with rave reviews, and many critics agreed Hawke deserves an Oscar for his masterful performance.

Boyhood star isn’t a sure bet, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see him on the list of the nominees come Oscar time. Same can’t be said about the stars of the second movie that dominated this year’s Gotham Awards – Eighth Grade.

This refreshing look on growing up in the age of social media will probably be snubbed at the Oscars. At least Elsie Fisher and Bo Burnham have their Gotham Awards to keep them company.

Full List Of 2018 Gotham Independent Film Awards Winners:

Best Feature – The Rider

Best Actor – Ethan Hawke (First Reformed)

Best Actress – Toni Collette (Hereditary)

Breakthrough Actor – Elsie Fisher (Eighth Grade)

Breakthrough Director – Bo Burnham (Eighth Grade)

Best Screenplay – Paul Schrader (First Reformed)

Breakthrough Series Long Form – Killing Eve

Breakthrough Series Short Form – 195 Lewis

Best Documentary – Hale County This Morning, This Evening

Audience Award – Won’t You Be My Neighbor?

Special Jury Award For Ensemble Performance – The Favourite

Made in NY Award – Sandra Lee

Gotham Tributes – Willem Dafoe, Paul Greengrass, Jon Kamen, Rachel Weisz
