Netflix gave us another hit series with the adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman and there’s more where that came from! Following the success of the first season of the fantasy drama, the streaming giant renewed it for Season 2.

The Sandman stars Tom Sturridge as Dream, the personification of dreams and nightmares, who sets out to restore order to his realm after being imprisoned for over a century. The series is based on Neil Gaiman’s iconic series of comic books, originally published during the ’90s.

In addition to Sturridge, the series also stars Boyd Holbrook, Vivienne Acheampong, Patton Oswalt, David Thewlis, Jenna Coleman, Gwendoline Christie, and Kirby Howell-Baptiste. Gaiman developed the series for Netflix alongside David S. Goyer and Allan Heinberg after it spent years in the development hell.

The news of the show’s renewal started circling around after DC Comic’s Twitter page tweeted, “The dream continues. [The Sandman] will return with new episodes based on multiple volumes of the Neil Gaiman graphic novel to explore even more stories of the Endless.”

The tweet has since been deleted, but the show’s renewal makes sense since it proved to be quite a hit for Netflix. It premiered to positive reviews and topped Netflix’s Top 10 list for three weeks following its premiere on August 5.

It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Tom Sturridge playing Lord Morpheus.

The English actor perfectly conveyed the King of Dream’s fury and kindness in The Sandman, but the creator of the character has revealed that another famous name had initially hoped to fill the role.

While appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Neil Gaiman shared that Michael Jackson wanted to play Dream of The Endless.

“By 1996, I was being taken to Warners, where the then-president of Warner Bros. sat me down and told me that Michael Jackson had phoned him the day before and asked him if he could star as Morpheus in The Sandman,” said the author who also serves as executive producer on the show. “So, there was a lot of interest in this and they knew that it was one of the Crown Jewels and what did I think? And I was like, ‘Ooh-um.’”

The fact that the King of Pop (who passed away in 2009) asked to portray the King of Dreams is testament to how long it has taken to get The Sandman made. Joseph Gordon Levitt was initially set to produce and star as the comic book character in a film which was announced in 2013 but never got off the ground.

“I was like, ‘It’s going to be so easy to cast! We just find, you know, an English-speaking actor with great cheekbones, there’s loads of them out there,’” Gaiman said of the Netflix series. “We saw, in the end, about 1,500 Morpheus auditions.”

Fans of Neil Gaiman’s iconic comic book series The Sandman spent three decades waiting for this novel to reach the big screen and that moment is finally here. The first teaser for the highly-anticipated series based on this comic book series was unveiled at Comic-Con and it truly does justice to the source material.

The series centers on the master of dreams called Morpheus/Dream, who gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies in a place called the Dreaming. After being captured and held captive for over a century, he manages to break free and starts a journey across different worlds and timelines to restore order to the kingdom of the Dreaming.

There have been several attempts to adapt The Sandman over the years, but this is the first successful one. Neil Gaiman told the Comic-Con audience that he spent 30 years trying to stop bad adaptations from happening, but he’s putting his full trust in this one.

“The determination everywhere to make this and get it right has been absolutely a breath of fresh air. This is Sandman being made for people who love Sandman, by people who love Sandman… I feel like I’m on the cusp, and I cannot wait until people see this show,” explained the author.

The cast of The Sandman will be led by Tom Sturridge, and it will also include Boyd Holbrook, Patton Oswalt, Vivienne Acheampong, Gwendoline Christie, Charles Dance, Jenna Coleman, David Thewlis, Stephen Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and many more. The first season will debut on Netflix on August 5 and will feature a total of 10 episodes.

Neil Gaiman has shared an update on the Netflix TV series adaptation of the comic series, The Sandman.

The Sandman is a comic series that follows the adventures of Death’s brother Morpheus following years of imprisonment. Once he escapes to the real world, Morpheus sets out on a mission to reclaim stolen artifacts.

The Netflix series is highly-anticipated but unfortunately, production was put on hold due to the pandemic. Filming was meant to begin in May but it has since been put on pause.

“We’re working with Netflix, we were meant to start shooting at the end of May,” Neil told Digital Spy. “Given this COVID world, everything is on pause.”

“The Netflix version is going to begin in 2021, so Morpheus will have been kept prisoner in the Netflix version for 105 years rather than 70 years. We’ll take that one, see what that does. It’s already in the scripts, it does interesting things because… if we were creating this character now, what gender would the character be?… who would they be? What would they be doing? And going on from there.”

We will share more updates on the upcoming series when they are announced.
