]]>Directed by Dana Trippe, the video for this pop-punk anthem shows the two artists towering over a makeshift city, and trying to kill their ego by tearing down posters and magazines with their faces on the cover. Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker has also been credited as their collaborator on this song, but he doesn’t make an appearance in the video.
“Grow” was featured on Smith’s latest album Lately I Feel Everything, and she felt it wasn’t working on its own when she first wrote it. That’s why she decided to reach out to Lavigne, who was right in her element from the very first moment she decided to hop on this song.
“I wanted the song to be a testament to accepting your growth and evolution, the ups and downs and the hills and valleys all equally… I feel like Avril just made that song 15 million times better, and I’m so grateful that she wanted to get on it,” Smith told Vogue.

]]>Lavigne’s latest single is probably the most radio-friendly and catchy song on her upcoming album Head Above Water. Its release is a perfect way to promote her highly-anticipated record, which is hitting the shelves on February 15.
The Canadian singer explained her latest single was inspired by something she actually went through. She admitted crossing paths with people who tried to put her down by calling her a dumb blonde, but she embraced this label and used it to fight back.
“It started as a misogynist intimidated by my independence. I just thought that was really unfair. If you’re a leader or you’re a strong woman or someone who has an opinion or is driven, you shouldn’t be made to feel bad about that,” said Lavigne.

]]>Lavigne hasn’t been releasing music in a long time because she spent the last few years focusing on her health. She took a five-year-long break after being diagnosed with Lyme disease, but her music was one thing that helped her cope.
“Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly,” explained Lavigne.
Canadian singer shared the video for Head Above Water with her fans on her 34th birthday. Lavigne started gathering visuals and imagining what the music video could look like from the very first day she wrote the song. She thanked the director Elliott Lester for hearing her ideas and going all the way to Iceland to bring her vision to life.
Head Above Water is the first single from Lavigne’s sixth studio album. She described it as a really emotional and powerful record, which reflects where she is today. Young singer is working on new songs every day and wants to release them by the end of the year.

]]>The message was accompanied with the promise to release a comeback single this month. The track is called “Head Above Water” and it came from a particularly difficult place. She said about the track:
“It is also the first song I wrote from my bed during one of the scariest moments of my life. I had accepted death and could feel my body shutting down. I felt like I was drowning. Like I was going under water and I just needed to come up for air.”
“Like I was in a river being pulled in a current. Unable to breathe. Praying to God for Him to help me just keep my head above the water. To help me see through the stormy weather. I grew closer to Him. My mother held me. In her arms, I wrote the first song that I am releasing to tell my story.”
She added: “I later met a beautiful soul, Travis Clark, and we sat down at the piano and sculpted the rest of the song. Then I took it to the genius, Stephan Moccio and love what he did to the music.”
In her message, she also explained the struggle writing music during her fight with Lyme Disease and admitted that it was the music which gave her the strength to keep on fighting.
“Five years have gone by since I released my last album,” Lavigne wrote. “I spent the last few years at home sick fighting Lyme Disease. Those were the worst years of my life as I went through both physical and emotional battles. I was able to turn that fight into music I’m really proud of. I wrote songs in my bed and on the couch and recorded there mostly as well. Words and lyrics that were so true to my experience came pouring out of me effortlessly.
“Truly… by keeping my spirits up, having goals to reach and a purpose to live for, my music helped to heal me and keep me alive.”
Avril Lavigne’s new single ‘Head Above Water’ will be released September 19th.
