The first film came out in 1995 and was an instant hit. Bad Boys II came out in 2003, and despite low ratings, was commercially successful. 16 years later, a third sequel will see Will and Martin clash with a modern, highly specialized unit when a security threat emerges in Miami.

In addition to the two stars, DJ Khaled is reported to be playing a role in the upcoming movie. He confirmed the news on an Instagram post, saying, “Blessed to announce that I will be joining Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in the cast of @Badboys #BadBoysforLife movie!”

Other names confirmed for the sequel include Paola Nunez, Jacob Scipio, Charles Melton, Alexander Ludwig and Vanessa Hudgens. The film’s former director Michael Bay won’t be returning. He was replaced by Bilall Fallah and Adil El Arbi.

Earlier this month, Smith had leaked a photo of the movie that seemed to show its official title will be Bad Boys For Lif3. But Khaled’s photo showed him posing by a chair with the conventional name Bad Boys for Life.

Hudgens had a pretty amazing year, even before the news of her casting was announced. In addition to leading the way in another hit rom-com, she starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in Second Act and landed the lead role in the upcoming made-for-TV musical Rent: Live.

We still don’t know anything about the character Hudgens is going to play in Bad Boys sequel, but her involvement is not the only reason to be excited about this movie. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence will be back for the ride as the duo of hip detectives we first met back in 1995.

The highly-anticipated sequel will hit the theaters on 17 January, 2020, under the name Bad Boys for Life.

This is a welcomed surprise for all fans of the franchise since the project was considered to be abandoned by Sony. The sequel was first planed in 2009, but since then it has changed multiple directors and gone through various script changes. At one moment Sony had planned to make back-to-back sequels before removing Bad Boys 3 from their release schedule in August 2017. After that, Martin Lawrence said that he thinks a sequel is unlikely.

“I don’t think we’re going to get one, not the way everything’s turning out.” said Lawrence at the time. “Will is off doing another movie, and I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m there, I’m ready right now. If they wanted to do it, I’m ready, but I don’t have control of that. That’s the studio’s decision.”

It looks like the studio has had a change of hearts and will bring the fans more action from the Smith/Lawrence duo. This comes just weeks after a Bad Boys TV spinoff officially got a pilot order. The television series will concentrate on character Syd Burnett, which is played by Gabrielle Union. Syd appears in Bad Boys II as the sister of Martin Lawrence’s Marcus.

Union will reprise her role in the TV show as well, while also serving as an executive producer. The Blacklist duo Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier will serve as writers for the show, while the producer of the first two Bad Boys movies, Jerry Bruckheimer will be one of the executive producers as well.

Although we don’t have much information about the show, NBC revealed the plot details for this spinoff:

“DEA agent Burnett has a fresh start in her new job as an LAPD detective. She’s partnered with Nancy McKenna, a working mom who can’t help but look at Syd’s freedom with some grass-is-greener envy. These two have totally different lifestyles and approaches, but they both are at the top of their fields in this action-packed, character-driven procedural.”

In the Bad Boys universe, Sydney Burnett is Marcus Burnett’s (Martin Lawrence) sister and Mike Lowrey’s (Will Smith) Love interest.

Although the franchise didn’t get a lot of praise from critics, it was loved by the audience and performed very well at the box office. The second entry in the series was released in 2003, and plans for the third installment started shaping up in 2008. After numerous script and director changes, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced in 2015 that there will be two sequels instead of one. Unfortunately, in August 2017, after various pushbacks of release dates, the studio completely removed both sequels from their release schedule.
