Award season in Hollywood reached its grand finale this month, but things are far from over in the UK. The BAFTA TV Awards nominations have finally been announced, and Netflix did pretty great since its hit shows The Crown and Black Mirror topped the list of nominees.

The Crown ended with a bang last year after six seasons, and BAFTA TV Awards voters honored its final season with eight nominations. Surprisingly enough, the best drama series wasn’t one of them, and The Gold, Happy Valley, Slow Horses, and Top Boy made the cut instead.

That didn’t stop The Crown from scoring four nods in the acting categories, for Dominic West, Elizabeth Debecki, Lesley Manville, and Salim Daw. It also secured four more nominations in the craft field, including best costume design, makeup/hair design, sound, and special effects.

It was also a great day for Netflix’s anthology series Black Mirror, which has been nominated for seven BAFTA TV Awards. Its episode “Demon 79” is one of the main contenders for best limited drama award, while its star Anjana Vasan received a nomination for best leading actress.

The 2024 British Academy Television Awards will take place on May 12 at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

The BAFTA TV Awards are the British equivalent of the Emmy Awards, and this ceremony will look quite different when it returns this year. Several major changes will be introduced in 2024, starting with merging single drama and mini-series into one category.

At the 2023 BAFTA TV Awards, I Am Ruth starring Kate Winslet came out victorious in the single drama category, while Nicole Lecky’s Mood won the best mini-series category. There will only be one winner next year as these categories merge into one, while the regular drama series field remains unchanged.

The newly introduced category will be called “limited drama series” and the shows that tell a complete story over 1-19 episodes will be eligible for nomination. This change was introduced after less than 20 entries were submitted for the single drama consideration last year.

“The introduction of limited drama maintains the opportunity for single self-contained films to be eligible following a decline in entries to the single drama category in recent years,” reads BAFTA’s official statement.

BAFTA also introduced several category changes in the daytime and sports field, such as merging its sports and live events awards into a single category. They’re also implementing a new eligibility rule, and UK-based productions will now be required to have a policy in place for tackling on-set bullying and harassment to be eligible for a nomination.

Last year has given us many amazing female-driven British series, and they stole the show at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards. Apple TV+ murder mystery drama Bad Sisters and Channel 4 hit comedy Derry Girls were crowded as the biggest winners of the night, taking home two awards each.

Bad Sisters dominated the drama field and defeated the likes of The Responder, Sherwood, and Somewhere Boy to be named the best drama series. Its star Anne-Marie Duff was the only cast member to receive an acting nod for her role, and she ended up winning the trophy for best supporting actress.

The final season of Derry Girls received a proper send-off at the BAFTAs and was crowned as the best-scripted comedy. Its star Siobhán McSweeney, who plays the fan-favorite character Sr. Michael, won the trophy for best female comedy performance.

The anthology series I Am… Ruth was also one of the biggest winners of the night. It picked up the trophies for best single drama and best actress for its leading lady Kate Winslet.

The 2023 British Academy Television Awards took place at the Royal Festival Hall in London on May 14, with Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan hosting the festivities.

Hollywood’s awards season may be over, but things are heating up across the pond. The British Academy unveiled nominations for the BAFTA TV Awards, and The Responder and This Is Going to Hurt are leading the way with a total of six nods each.

The Responder is one of the shows competing for the best drama series, along with Bad Sisters, Sherwood, and Somewhere Boy. It scored additional three nominations in the acting field—best actor (Martin Freeman), best supporting actor (Josh Finan), and best supporting actress (Adelayo Adedayo).

When it comes to the comedy field, Am I Being Unreasonable? is leading the way with four nods. It’s one of the shows competing for best scripted comedy series, along with Derry Girls, Big Boys, and Ghosts. Its stars Lenny Rush and Daisy May Cooper scored acting nods for the best male and female comedy performance, respectively.

This Is Going to Hurt, led by Ben Whishaw, is the front-runner for the best mini-series, but it will have to face tough competition in A Spy Among Friends, Mood, and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.

The 2023 BAFTA TV Awards will take place on May 14 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. The ceremony will be broadcasted live on BBC One, with Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan serving as hosts.

BAFTA will be announcing the nominations for its Television Awards and Television Craft Awards on June 4, but a date has yet to be set for the ceremonies because of the coronavirus.

The nominations were set to be unveiled in March and the main TV awards were supposed to take place on May 17, but the pandemic put a wrench in BAFTA’s plans. New dates for the event will be announced soon.

“During this difficult time, we want to applaud the fantastic efforts of the many talented individuals, both behind and in front of the camera, many of whom have continued to inform and entertain the nation in recent weeks. We look forward to announcing more details about the ceremonies soon,” BAFTA CEO Amanda Berry said.

The nominations for the publicly voted Virgin Media Must-See Moment Award will be announced on June 3.

Last year has given us more amazing British shows than we can count, and it’s finally time for them to be honored at the BAFTA TV Awards. The list of nominees for this award show is in, with the historical mini-series Small Axe and the royal drama The Crown leading the way.

Steve McQueen’s Small Axe is in the running for 15 awards, including the best mini-series. It scored many of its nominations in technical categories, but several of its stars—including John Boyega, Letitia Wright, Malachi Kirby, and Micheal Ward—are competing for acting awards.

The Crown was right behind with 10 nominations, including the best drama. Its competition in this category will include three Sky Atlantic series – I Hate Suzie, Gangs of London, and Save Me.
