For many years, rumors have swirled that 007 will be played by a woman. And with the upcoming film being Daniel Craig’s last, the time to implement a gender flip seemed now.

But even though some of Hollywood’s fiercest actresses had put their hands up for the role, including Sex Education’s Gillian Anderson, the Bond bosses aren’t buying the prospective estrogen injection. 

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” veteran producer, Barbara Broccoli, firmly told Variety. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

The 25^th film in the franchise, No Time to Die, opens on April 8^th.

With Daniel Craig’s expected departure from the franchise, rumors have been circulating who will take over the role of the British spy. A fan favorite to star as the lead was Idris Elda, who enjoyed teasing fans but confirmed that he will not take part in the franchise. 

Some fans suggested that the franchise cast a female Bond, but hopes of a gender switch were silenced by producer Barbara Broccoli, who told the Guardian that that direction is very unlikely. 

“Bond is male. He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male,” she told the outlet. “And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women,” she added. “Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.” Finally, she added that the Bond character had in fact “transformed with the times”. “I’ve tried to do my part, and I think particularly with the Daniel [Craig] films, they’ve become much more current in terms of the way women are viewed.”

The next installment helmed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Craig is scheduled to hit theaters on February 14, 2020.
