Baz Luhrmann is receiving rave reviews for his latest film Elvis, and he’s already set his eyes on another exciting project. He’s working with Hulu on a six-part limited-series Faraway Downs, which is basically an extended cut of his 2008 film Australia.

The original film starred Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman and it was Luhrmann’s epic love letter to his home country. It followed the journey of an Englishwoman who inherits a sprawling cattle ranch from her late husband and joins forces with a local cattle drover to protect the ranch from the Australian cattle barons.

Faraway Downs will include the footage that was captured while the original Australia was being filmed, but the expanded, serialized version will also feature a new ending and an updated soundtrack.

“While Australia the film has its own life, there was another telling of this story; one with different layers, nuances and even alternative plot twists that an episodic format has allowed us to explore. Drawn from the same material, Faraway Downs is a new variation on Australia for audiences to discover,” said Luhrmann in a statement.

Hulu will release the series in the US, while Disney+ and Star+ are expected to handle international markets this winter.

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic is 159 minutes long, and if that doesn’t feel like enough – we’ve got some good news for you! The Australian director revealed there’s a four-hour version of the movie that includes many scenes that we won’t get to see when this movie hits the theatres in a few days.

Luhrmann discussed the upcoming biopic in an interview with Radio Times and revealed that he had to cut down many extra scenes due to time constraints.

“I would have liked to lean into some of the other things more – there’s so much more… There just comes a point where you can’t have everything in, so I just tried to track the spirit of the character,” explained Luhrmann.

Some of the scenes we won’t get to see in the 2:39 version are Elvis’ famous meeting with President Richard Nixon, details of his romance with his first girlfriend Dixie, and the depth of his relationship with his band before Colonel Tom Parker decided to get rid of them.

Elvis stars Austin Butler as the King of Rock’n’Roll, with Tom Hanks, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Olivia DeJonge, Luke Bracey, and more joining him in supporting roles. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and it’s set to hit the theatres on June 24.

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and the audience welcomed it with open arms. Luhrmann and the film’s cast received explosive applause and a 10-minute standing ovation following the film’s premiere.

Elvis received the longest standing ovation in Cannes so far after premiering at the festival on Wednesday night. It won’t take too long for the rest of the world to see it, since it’s set to premiere in theaters on June 24.

Elvis sees Austin Butler take on the role of the King of Rock’n’Roll and chronicles his journey to stardom and his complicated relationship with manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The film also stars Luke Bracey, David Wenham, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Gary Clark Jr., Richard Roxburgh, and Helen Thompson.

Following the film’s premiere, Luhrmann praised the cast and crew for their bravery to finish shooting the film during Covid, adding he’s grateful for a chance to share it with an audience in Cannes.

“To see these streets so full of people who love movies of every form of life, every kind of movie, says so much more about what this place means and what it means to be back in the cinema. For that we are eternally grateful, Cannes,” said Luhrmann.

Harry Styles and Ansel Elgort were amongst the actors in the running for the role of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Elvis biopic, but the famous director eventually found his king of rock and roll in Austin Butler.

Unlike other actors in the running, Butler was relatively unknown before landing this role. He played supporting roles on TV shows Switched at Birth, Ruby & The Rockits and The Carrie Diaries, and caught Luhrmann’s eye with his Broadway debut in The Iceman Cometh.

“Through a journey of extensive screen testing and music and performance workshops, I knew unequivocally that I had found someone who could embody the spirit of one of the world’s most iconic musical figures,” said the Australian director in a statement announcing Butler’s casting.

Baz Luhrmann won’t be the first renowned filmmaker that Butler had a chance to work with. 2019 has been a pretty amazing year for the young actor, who also landed supporting roles in Jim Jarmusch’s horror-comedy The Dead Don’t Die and Quentin Tarantino’s latest film Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.
