]]>Last night’s ceremony brought a series of predictable wins, but it was anyone’s ball game in the main field. Green Book was going against several strong contenders, including Roma and A Star Is Born, but eventually emerged triumphant and scored the biggest win of the night.
In addition to winning best picture, this movie also scooped additional two awards – best original screenplay and best supporting actor (Mahershala Ali). It was also a big night for Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which was the only movie to win four awards at this year’s Oscars.
Black Panther and Roma were right behind, with three each. Alfonso Cuarón’s deeply personal black and white drama was one of the biggest winners of the night, despite the fact it didn’t win best picture. It was honored in three major categories – best director, best cinematography and best foreign film.
This year’s Oscars took place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre . It was the first ceremony in three decades to be conducted without a host, but presenters Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Maya Rudolph managed to bring the laughs with their opening salvo.

]]>When it comes to casting a legendary role in what will shape up to be one of the most highly anticipated movies of the year, you would think that a lot of checkboxes would need to be filled. For starters, you want someone who can act, someone who has the image and to come across as a convincing Freddie Mercury, you would think you would want a sensational singer… which Rami Malek was not.
Funnily enough, producer Graham King was able to see past Malek’s confession that he could not sing and cast him for the role anyway.
“We sat down for a six-hour meeting and he’d really only seen me in Mr. Robot, where I played this profoundly alienated, socially anxious human being who’s a pretty far cry from Freddie Mercury,” Malek recalled to Deadline.
He then confessed: “Graham saw something in me with Dennis O’Sullivan, and gave me a shot. I said, ‘listen, I’m not a singer. I don’t play the piano. I move in a very interesting way on a dancefloor – I don’t know if I’d call it rhythm.’
“But somehow, I just said, ‘if I have the time, I can get there. If you help me out with the things I need’.”
In the end, King’s faith definitely paid off. Malek gave an astonishing performance in Bohemian Rhapsody and is already a favorite to win an Oscar next year.

“He’s incredible… without doubt, he’ll be on the nominations list for an Oscar and well deserved as well,” May told the Press Association. “He inhabited Freddie to the point where we even started to think of him as Freddie. Really remarkable.”
In relation to the mixed reviews from the film, May said: “We’ve lived with this project for nine years and it’s incredible to see it doing so well. It came out to s***ty reviews, as some of our work has before, but the public has embraced it magnificently. Everybody gave 200%, from the actors and technicians to the production team and hair and makeup, everyone.”

The musical biopic about the iconic British rock band has rocked its audience to the tune of an estimated $50 million opening weekend dethroning the also hugely successful Halloween as the No. 1 film in North America. ]]>In case you missed it, the Mr. Robot actor will be rocking you as he plays Freddie Mercury in the Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Rami’s performance has already earned him heaps of praise from critics who believe that he brought the lead singer to life in the most charismatic manner.
“[It was] kind of the gun-to-the-head moment,” he told The Guardian about accepting the part. “What do you do? And I like to think if it’s a fight or flight situation, I’m going to fight. The scariest endeavors that I’ve chosen to take in my life have been the most fulfilling and rewarding. And this has proven to defend that equation.”
Freddie joined Queen in 1970 and remained the lead vocalist until his death from AIDS-related pneumonia in 1991.
“It’s an arduous thing to tell someone’s life in just two hours,” said Rami. “What’s the nature of celebrating a life? Definitely not avoiding his death in any way, or what caused his death, which is the AIDS virus. But I think if you don’t celebrate his life, and his struggles, and how complicated he was, and how transformative he was — and wallow instead in the sadness of what he endured and his ultimate death — then that could be a disservice to the profound, vibrant, radiant nature of such an indelible human being.”
Bohemian Rhapsody opens on the 24th of October.

]]>According to reports, the studio has fired Singer because the director has failed to return to set after Thanksgiving. There are also claims that Singer’s work ethic was questionable and he didn’t get along with Malek and the rest of the cast. Singer, on the other hand, puts the blame on the studio.
“Bohemian Rhapsody is a passion project of mine.” said Singer in his statement. “With fewer than three weeks to shoot remaining, I asked Fox for some time off so I could return to the U.S. to deal with pressing health matters concerning one of my parents. This was a very taxing experience, which ultimately took a serious toll on my own health. Unfortunately, the studio was unwilling to accommodate me and terminated my services. This was not my decision and it was beyond my control.”
Singer also admitted he and Malek had “creative differences on set”, but worked them out and successfully continued to collaborate after.
This, however, isn’t the first time Singer left the movie in the middle of production since he disappeared for some time when he was working on X-Men: Apocalypse.
It is reported that director of photography Thomas Newton Sigel will take directing responsibilities for now, although it isn’t clear if another director will come in and finish the job.
Bohemian Rhapsody is scheduled for release on December 25, 2018.
