The new version of Mean Girls had high expectations to live up to, and it managed to exceed them during its opening weekend. The new musical inspired by the 2000s teen classic topped the box office during the MLK four-day weekend with a $33 million opening.

Mean Girls was projected to gross $27–30 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend, and it lived up to the hype. It debuted at $28.65 million in North America, and its total opening weekend gross went up to $33.2 million during the fourth day in the theaters. It also made an additional $6.5 million overseas, after opening in 16 international markets.

Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution, praised Tina Fey’s new twist for resonating with audiences and added they’re expecting even better results as time goes by.

“It’s no secret that the release calendar is a little light for the first couple months of the year and because of the reception to this film we stand a chance of broadening this audience. It really is a crowd-pleaser,” said Aronson in a statement.

Mean Girls premiered on January 12, and releasing it theatrically proved to be a slam dunk for Paramount after they decided to make a pivot from the straight-to-streaming release due to positive test scores.

After a lot of anticipation, The Color Purple finally hit the theatres on December 25, and its opening day was one for the books! The adaptation of the popular Broadway musical grossed $18.2 million domestically, scoring the second-biggest Christmas Day opening ever.

The Color Purple was projected to gross around $8–10 million on its first day, but it exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations. With $18.2 million grossed domestically, this film easily soared to the top of the Christmas box office and set several major records along the way.

This marks the largest Christmas Day opening for a movie since Sherlock Holmes, which brought in $24.6 million in 2009. It also scored the highest-grossing post-pandemic domestic opening day for a musical, surpassing Wonka, which made $14.4 million on its first day in North American theatres.

The Color Purple is the latest take on Alice Walker’s iconic novel, and it draws inspiration from the hit Broadway musical of the same name. It chronicles the journey of Celie Harris-Johnson, an African-American woman living in the South during the early 1900s.

Fantasia Barrino plays Celie, while the film’s star-studded supporting cast includes Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Ciara, Jon Batiste, and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

After a lot of anticipation, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes finally hit the theatres last week, and it’s doing a pretty great job reviving this franchise. This prequel topped the box office during its opening weekend and grossed $98.5 million worldwide.

The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes narrowly missed the $100 mark during its opening weekend, but it came really close to earning back its budget after grossing $98.5 million, including $44 million domestically and $54.5 million in international markets.

Despite managing to top the box office, The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes struggled to meet the box office projections during its opening weekend. It also had the lowest start of the franchise, but still helped The Hunger Games series reach the $3 billion mark on the box office.

This highly-anticipated prequel is set over six decades before the original series, during the 10th Hunger Games. It centers on the young Coriolanus Snow before he became the tyrannical leader of Panem.

The ensemble cast of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is led by Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler, while Peter Dinklage, Jason Schwartzman, Hunter Schafer, Josh Andrés Rivera, and Viola Davis star in supporting roles. Francis Lawrence returned to direct it, while Michael Lesslie and Michael Arndt wrote the script.

After a few slow years, this summer has been pretty amazing for the moviegoers everywhere. The summer box office crossed the $4 billion mark domestically for the first time since 2019, largely thanks to the success of the smash hits Barbie and Oppenheimer.

Both released on July 21, Barbie and Oppenheimer became a viral phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer”, and many people saw them as a double feature. By doing so, the moviegoers helped increase the public’s interest in these films and made it possible for both projects to rack in impressive box office numbers.

Barbie became the highest-grossing film of 2023, earning $612 million in North America and $1.36 billion globally to date. Oppenheimer exceeded everyone’s wildest expectations and went on to earn $311 at the domestic box office and $850 million worldwide.

These weren’t the only films contributing to the impressive summer box office. The list of top earners in North America between May and August this year also includes Sony’s animated superhero flick Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($381 million), Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($358 million), and Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake ($298 million.

All these box office hits contributed to this summer’s $4 billion haul, for the first time in the pandemic era, but the box office is yet to recover to the pre-pandemic heights of 2019 ($4.38 billion), according to Comscore.

It was just a matter of time before Barbie crossed the billion-dollar mark following its historic opening, and we didn’t have to wait for too long for that moment to come. Barbie joined the $1 billion club during its third weekend, becoming the first film by a solo female director to ever reach this number.

Led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, the first live-action film inspired by Mattel’s iconic doll knocked it out of the park as soon as it hit the theatres on July 21. It earned $162 million domestically and $194.3 million internationally during its opening weekend alone, scoring the biggest opening ever for a film helmed by a female director.

Three weeks later, Barbie is still breaking records, and it’s currently the second second-highest-grossing film of 2023, with over $1 billion earned.

Warner Bros’ Jeff Goldstein, president of domestic distribution, and Andrew Cripps, president of international distribution, are as impressed by these numbers as we are, and they praised the team behind this film for making it happen.

“This is a watershed moment for Barbie, and no one but Greta Gerwig could have brought this cross-generational icon and her world to life in such a funny, emotional, and entertaining story, one that is resonating with all four quadrants of moviegoers and literally turning the entire world pink,” said the duo in a statement.

Barbie created more buzz than any movie in recent memory, and its box office numbers reflect the film’s enormous success. This highly-anticipated comedy knocked it out of the park with an epic $337 million global opening and shattered several major box office records.

The first live-action film inspired by Mattel’s iconic doll hails from the acclaimed director Greta Gerwig, and it’s led by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. It shows Barbie experiencing an existential crisis and setting off from Barbieland to the Real World to find her true purpose.

The marketing team for Barbie pulled all the stops with the film’s promo tour, but even they couldn’t have predicted what a success it would be. It significantly exceeded projections, earning $337 million during its opening weekend, with $155 million generated in North America and an additional $182 million in other territories.

By doing so, Barbie scored the highest-grossing weekend for a female-directed film. This also marks the largest opening weekend for a film in 2023, and the highest-grossing weekend for a film based on a fresh IP, that’s not a sequel, remake, or superhero film.

Barbie premiered on July 21, along with Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, and many moviegoers saw them as a double feature as a part of the viral Barbenheimer trend, fueling the fourth-biggest box office weekend in history.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is one of Marvel’s most anticipated projects of the year and it’s certainly living up to the hype. This superhero flick managed to score $90 million during its opening weekend, singlehandedly breaking the Labor Day box office curse.

Labor Day is traditionally considered to be a slow weekend at the box office, as most people try to make the best of the final days of summer and usually stay out of theaters. That didn’t stop Shang-Chi from collecting $90 million in its first four days of release at the domestic box office, breaking the record previously held by 2007’s Halloween with $30.6 million.

Shang-Chi also easily broke the IMAX domestic weekend Labor Day record, with $8 million earned in North America alone. Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX, praised it for delivering an important statement about people wanting to get back to the movies.

“It’s clear that great filmmaking plus an exclusive theatrical release is a winning formula at the box office, and this groundbreaking film has successfully launched an exciting new cinematic journey for Marvel and a strong fall blockbuster slate for the industry,” said Gelfond in a statement.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead, and it was highly praised for pushing the boundaries for Asian representation in Hollywood since its premiere on September 3rd.

Universal and MGM’s Candyman is slaying the domestic box office in its opening weekend. The movie is projected to gross $20.7 million, according to Variety.

Directed by Nia DeCosta, the horror film made $9.1 million from 3,569 theaters on Friday and is expected to make another $11 million by the end of the weekend.

Written and produced by Jordan Peele, the movie is a sequel to the 1992 film of the same name directed by Bernard Rose and it’s a take on the urban legend of a killer who is summoned by those who repeat his name five times while looking into a mirror.

Candyman stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Teyonah Parris, and Colman Domingo.

In the No. 2 spot on the box office charts is Free Guy starring Ryan Reynolds, which has made nearly $80 million in three weeks. Paw Patrol comes in at No. 3 with a total to date of $23.97 million, Jungle Cruise at No. 4 with a total to date of $99.8 million, and Don’t Breathe 2 at No. 5 with a total to date of $24.25 million.

It’s definitely not a normal August at the Box Office but that doesn’t mean you don’t get an update!

While it’s true that moviegoing is not quite back to normal, the domestic box office held quite well over the weekend. Disney/20th Century Studios’ Free Guy is still at the top of the charts grossing $18.8 million over its sophomore weekend for a 10-day total of $58.8 million.

Free Guy fared much better over its second weekend in theaters compared to other films that opened this summer including The Suicide Squad, Black Widow, and F9: The Fast Saga, all of which declined around 70% in their second weekend.

The Ryan Reynolds action comedy remained victorious over the two new films that opened this weekend—Paw Patrol and Reminiscence.

If you needed further evidence that this is an August like no other on the big screen, it’s the animated movie based on the popular kids’ TV show Paw Patrol that came ahead of the Hugh Jackman starring romance noir movie. The kid flick exceeded its single-digit expectations grossing $13 million at 3,184 theaters nationwide.

Paw Patrol was well received by its targeted audiences but also by parents and even critics!

“These movies are not in the league with the Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, Illumination juggernauts, but they cost less, make money, and occasionally break out à la Alvin and the Chipmunks, Mr. Peabody & Sherman and Scooby-Doo,” said David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research.

Sonic the Hedgehog has had a record-breaking opening weekend in the North American box offices.

The Paramount action-adventure, based on the Sega video game character, was aiming to make $40-45 million from its $87 million production and it’s not only expected to surpass that, but it could break the record for the best video game feature adaption, which was set by Legendary/Warner Bros’ Pokemon: Detective Pikachu.

To break the record set by Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog will have to make anything over $54.3 million in three days. In its opening weekend, Sonic the Hedgehog came close to breaking the record, generating $53.99 million in three days and around $65 million in its 4-day opening.

Sonic the Hedgehog opened in 4,130 locations and the film follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz), the world’s fastest hedgehog, and his best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) trying to save the planet from the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

So far, the reviews for the film have been positive with Rotten Tomatoes giving it 63 percent. Sonic the Hedgehog was originally supposed to be released on November 8, 2019, but there was a backlash from fans regarding the design of Sonic, which caused Paramount and director Jeff Fowler to re-design Sonic and delay the release.
