Disney+ gave amazing spin-off shows to many of Marvel’s very best supporting players, and they’ve got another one on the way. Danai Gurira, who played the fierce warrior Okoye in Black Panther, is set to reprise her iconic role in an upcoming Disney+ series.

This promising show will tell the origin story of the Dora Milaje general, and it’s actually been in development for quite some time. Earlier this year, it’s been reported that the Black Panther director Ryan Coogler struck a five-year exclusive television deal with Disney+ and this series will be one of the projects born out of this collaboration.

In addition to appearing in this Disney+ series, Gurira is also set to play Okoye in the upcoming sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The future of this project was uncertain after the tragic passing of its main star Chadwick Boseman, but it’s been confirmed that the role of T’Challa won’t be recast and the sequel will proceed with the rest of the original cast.

Okoye isn’t the first fan-favorite Marvel character to get her stand-along series on Disney+. WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier were released to great success earlier this year, while Loki is set to premiere on Disney+ on June 9th.

Danai Gurira stepped into the international spotlight with the role of Michonne in the zombie series The Walking Dead. Her incredible journey came to an end this weekend and the actress said goodbye to the iconic character that she’s been playing for almost a decade.

Gurira made her last appearance on this show in the most recent episode, “What We Become”, and described her departure as peaceful, beautiful, sad, and gratifying.

“I had gratitude for how they allowed me to exit the show and how well they’d taken care of the character. I had gratitude for how much I got to do, and how I got to exit in a way that honored the character and gave her an ability to be true to herself,” the actress told Deadline.

Danai Gurira joined The Walking Dead in 2012, and her star has been on the rise ever since. She found success as a playwright with her Tony-nominated play Eclipsed and became familiar to the international audiences thanks to the role of Okoye in Black Panther and several other MCU films.

After being in development since 2014, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira’s adaptation of the novel Americanah has received a straight-to-series order at HBO Max.

The premium cabler’s forthcoming streaming service has given the limited series a 10-episode order.

“Through Americanah, Chimamanda brought the African female voice into mainstream consciousness in an unprecedented way,” Gurira said in a statement of the original novel. “It is intellectually incisive, indicting, yet full of humor, and riddled with humanity. She makes unheard voices familiar, universal and yet palpably specific. I am honored to bring her incredible novel to life on the screen. I’m thrilled to collaborate once again with Lupita who brings her astounding ability as a performer and producer shepherding this project, along with HBO Max’s unbridled enthusiasm to bring this groundbreaking narrative to the TV audience.”

Nyong’o, added, “Americanah has been a passion project for me since I read Chimamanda’s beautiful novel in 2013. It’s a tale that is simultaneously timely and timeless. HBO Max is the perfect partner to bring this profound and celebrated story to life, and I’m thrilled that Danai will bring to the project her intelligence, wit, and understanding of the stories and the worlds of Americanah.”

Gurira will pen the adaptation and serve as showrunner. Nyong’o will star and both will executive produce.

One of The Walking Dead’s breakout stars is reportedly exiting the show.

Season 10 of AMC’s zombie drama is likely to be Danai Gurira’s last.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gurira who joined the series in Season 3 and stars as Michonne, will exit The Walking Dead. The outlet reports that Gurira has signed a deal to return for her final season of the hit drama in a limited capacity, which basically means that she is set to star in a handful of episodes throughout Season 10.

Gurira’s exit will follow Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan’s departures from the show in  Season 9. Gurira is likely to segue to the three Walking Dead TV movies starring Lincoln.

At the time of his exit, Lincoln said, ”It’s not the beginning of the end, it’s the end of the beginning. And I like the idea that we get to tell a bigger story, maybe with a sort of wider vista. And I’ve always been interested in what’s going on out there, you know, whether or not there is contact with the wider world. I want to know the meta of it all. And I suppose to be able to kind of touch upon that in a contained story for me is a very exciting proposition… Maybe it’s the start of a bigger story.”

Gurira’s other credits include last year’s Black Panther. She also a Tony-nominated playwright.

THR was the first to report the news. AMC and Gurira’s reps declined comment.
