Sir Elton John is going out with a very big bang.

The musical legend has been confirmed as the headliner for next year’s Glastonbury festival which will be his very last show. It signals the conclusion of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road which began in September 2018.

More than 300 dates around the world had been scheduled, with a few postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down” singer’s health. His UK leg, which includes Ireland, is set to commence in March, and will now officially end with Glastonbury.

“It gives me enormous pleasure to let you know that the one and only Elton John will be making his first ever Glastonbury appearance, headlining the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday night next year,” declared festival co-organizer, Emily Eavis. “This will be the final UK show of Elton’s last ever tour, so we will be closing the Festival and marking this huge moment in both of our histories with the mother of all send-offs.”

Although Glastonbury only takes place on June 21-25 2023, tickets for the event are already sold out.

“There is no more fitting way to say goodbye to my British fans,” John stated. “I can’t wait to embrace the spirit of the greatest festival in the world. It’s going to be incredibly emotional.”

After COVID-19 put a halt on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, Elton John decided to return to the studio and make some new music. This resulted in a collaboration album that will be released on October 22nd and will see John teaming up with Lil Nas X, Nicki Minaj, Eddie Vedder, and many other music stars.

The album, titled The Lockdown Sessions, was recorded over the course of the past 18 months. It is compiled out of “one-off projects that kept cropping up” according to John’s Instagram post in which he revealed the details about the record.

“I’ve ended with a selection of really interesting and diverse stuff that was completely different to anything I’m known for, stuff that took me out of my comfort zone into completely new territory,” wrote “The Rocketman” singer in the caption.

The Lockdown Sessions features 16 songs. Six tracks on the project were already released, including “Cold Heart (Pnau Remix)” with Dua Lipa and “The Pink Phantom” with Gorillaz. Some of the more intriguing unreleased tracks include “Always Love You,” a collab with Young Thug and Nicki Minaj, “I’m Not Gonna Miss You,” a team-up with the late American guitarist Glen Campbell, and “Finish Line,” on which he collaborated with Stevie Wonder.

Elton John already released one album in 2021, presenting Regimental Sgt. Zippo in June. The five-time Grammy Award recorded the album back in 1968 but never released it. It was shelved in favor of Empty Sky, which came out a year later and served as John’s debut studio effort.

Two more big acts postpone their shows due to the Coronavirus and the struggle to contain it — Elton John and the Foo Fighters.

On the band’s official Twitter account, the Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl addressed his fans saying that out of concern for their health, the band postponed dates of its Van tour. The Phoenix show was moved from April 12th to December 5th, Albuquerque was moved from April 14th to December 3rd, and Oklahoma City was moved from April 16th to December 1st. Later shows in April and May are still to be rescheduled.

The singer mentioned his refusal to postpone a show after he broke his leg but stated that this is another thing. “The lights and stage are in the trucks, ready to go,” wrote Grohl. “The SECOND we are given the go-ahead, we’ll come tear s**t up like we always do Promise.”

Meanwhile, Elton John’s shows on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour from March 26th to May 2nd have been put off also. “This tough decision has been made with the safety and well-being of his fans put to the fore, at a time when health services are under increased pressure and with the concern that these gatherings risk accelerating the spread of the Coronavirus [COVID-19],” John stated.

Elton John announced on Wednesday that he will be retiring from touring, but is determined to go out with a big bang. Speaking at a press conference, the 70-year-old singer announced his intentions to embark on a three-year, 300-date tour before making the retirement official.

“The announcement is that I am not going to be touring anymore, apart from the last tour, which is going to start in September of this year. It’ll be a global tour. And it’s the last time that I will be touring and traveling the world,” he said during a Q&A with Anderson Cooper. “My priorities have changed in my life. Ten years ago, if you’d had said I have to stop touring, I’d say, ‘No, no. I’m a working man.”

John added that “the time is right to say thank you to all my fans around the world globally and to say goodbye and just to have a breath” choosing to focus on other things in life, most importantly his sons. This, however, doesn’t mean that he will stop making music. “I will be creative until the day I die,” said the signer.

Speaking about his farewell tour titled Farewell Yellow Brick Road, Elton John promised that “It’ll be the best production I’ve ever done” while denying reports about his bad health, saying he feels great.
