Kate Burton, who plays the role of Ellis Grey, is reportedly also set to return in the new season for multiple episodes. While Ellis died in season three due to cardiac arrest, Burton reprised the role on multiple occasions in later seasons during flashback sequences. It is unknown how the character will be reintroduced to the show this time, but it will most likely have something to do with the appearance of Dr. Hamilton.

Grey’s Anatomy, which is on air since 2005, received season 18 renewal back in May. The new episodes are set to premiere on September 30th.

Since it’s establishment in 2005, the medical drama has always been a ratings grabber for ABC, and now it officially holds the title of the network’s longest-running primetime drama.

During its 14th season, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will say goodbye to two fan favourites — Jessica Capshaw who plays Dr. Arizona Robbins and Sarah Drew who portrays Dr. April Kenner. Showrunner, Shonda Rhimes, also announced that she would be leaving ABC after more than 10 years to pursue a production deal with Netflix, but will stay remain as executive producer on her current series.

The renewal also sees Meredith herself, Ellen Pompeo, becoming the highest-paid actress on a TV drama after signing a 2-year contract which will earn her $575,000 per episode.

“Grey’s Anatomy has a special place in my heart and millions of viewers feel the same way,” said ABC Entertainment boss, Channing Dungey. “Thanks to fiercely loyal fans who have been on this journey since the beginning, and new generations of viewers who continue to discover the joy and drama of Grey Sloan Memorial, the show is as strong as ever.”
