Veteran stage, movie, and TV actor Peter Gallagher is adding ABC’s popular medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to his impressive resume. According to Deadline, Gallagher will join the show’s 18th season in a recurring role and will be part of a major storyline.

Gallagher’s character is named Dr. Alan Hamilton, and he is someone who knew Meredith’s mother Ellis Grey “back in the days.” Hamilton will meet Meredith in the season 18 premiere, but further details remain under wraps.

Kate Burton, who plays the role of Ellis Grey, is reportedly also set to return in the new season for multiple episodes. While Ellis died in season three due to cardiac arrest, Burton reprised the role on multiple occasions in later seasons during flashback sequences. It is unknown how the character will be reintroduced to the show this time, but it will most likely have something to do with the appearance of Dr. Hamilton.

Grey’s Anatomy, which is on air since 2005, received season 18 renewal back in May. The new episodes are set to premiere on September 30th.

Peter Gallagher is best known for his roles in movies like comedy-drama Short Cuts, Sam Mendes’s Academy Award-winning pic American Beauty, and, more recently, romantic comedy Palm Springs. TV audiences, on the other hand, know him best as Sandy Cohen in teen drama The O.C. and Stacey Koons in Californication.
