Liam Payne, who became a household name during his time with One Direction, tragically passed away at 31. His sudden death triggered an outpouring of tributes from fans, peers, and his former collaborators, including the members of One Direction, who were “completely devastated” by the news.
Payne was found dead at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16, after he fell from a third-floor balcony. The singer’s fans gathered at the hotel in the Palermo neighborhood to pay tribute to the former One Direction singer, and his father visited the memorial upon arriving in Argentina.
Payne’s One Direction bandmates, Niall Horan, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, released individual and joint statements, reflecting on the time they spent together.
“We’re completely devastated by the news of Liam’s passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever,” reads the band’s joint statement.
Payne joined One Direction after taking part in the singing competition The X Factor in 2010, and they went down in history as one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. After the band went on hiatus in 2016, Payne shifted focus to his solo music and released his debut album LP1 in 2019.
