We’ve had to say goodbye to some important cast members throughout Grey’s Anatomy’s 16 seasons run, and another has just joined the list… Justin Chambers has confirmed that he has left the hit ABC series. 

Part of the drama from the very first episode, Karev was one of the original five interns that included Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), Christina Yang (Sandra Oh), Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl), and George O’Malley (T.R. Knight). Of the quintet, only Meredith and Karev are still part of the show, with the pair becoming more reliant on each other than ever. 

“There’s no good time to say goodbye to a show and character that’s defined so much of my life for the past 15 years,” Chambers said in a statement confirming his exit. “For some time now, however, I have hoped to diversify my acting roles and career choices. And, as I turn 50 and am blessed with my remarkable, supportive wife and five wonderful children, now is that time.”

As it turns out, Dr. Karev has already been discharged. In the 350^th episode which aired last November, the pediatric surgeon left to care for his ailing mother. Little did we know that that was the last time he’d be seen in the hallways of Grey-Sloan…

Earlier this year, Pompeo signed a massive $20 million a year deal to stay on Grey’s Anatomy for season 15 and season 16. Now, during her recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, she was asked whether she sees herself continuing with the show after the 16th season .

“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell,” – the 48-year-old actress told EW. “It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”

Although many will say that even if Ellen Pompeo leaves, Grey’s Anatomy could survive to see a run of few more years, that is highly unlikely. Her character is the focal point of the series, and it is clear that she is one of the main reasons for its popularity. Also, series creator Shonda Rhimes basically said in late 2017 that the show will end when Pompeo decides to do so.

“Ellen and I have a pact that I’m going to do the show as long as she’s going to do the show,” – Rhimes told E! News at the time. “So, the show will exist as long as both of us want to do it. If she wants to stop, we’re stopping. “

When Grey’s Anatomy eventually wraps up, Ellen Pompeo already knows what she wants to do next, and it isn’t a role in another TV series or major feature movie. Talking with Deadline in January, Pompeo revealed that she is looking to do producing and directing. She already directed two episodes and is producer of Grey’s Anatomy, while serving as co-executive producer for series’ spinoff Station 19.
