H.E.R. Set to Play Belle in ABC’s “Beauty and the Beast” Special

ABC is plotting an animated and live-action blended special called Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration and they found the perfect person to play the lead role. The five-time Grammy-winning R&B singer H.E.R. will portray Belle in this exciting special.

This TV special will pay homage to the timeless tale and it’ll feature new sets and costumes inspired by the classic story. It will air on December 15 on ABC before heading to Disney+ the next day. Hamish Hamilton is set to direct the special, while Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, In the Heights) serves as the executive producer.

H.E.R. released an official statement expressing her excitement to join the project and said she’s proud that the world will finally get to see a Black and Filipino Belle.

“I can’t believe I get to be a part of the Beauty and the Beast legacy. I have always wanted to be a Disney princess, and I get to work with two wonderful directors Hamish Hamilton and my favorite, Jon M. Chu. It is very surreal and I couldn’t be more grateful,” said H.E.R.

Most people know H.E.R as an accomplished singer, but playing Belle won’t be her first attempt at acting. She’s set to make her feature film debut in the upcoming film adaptation of The Color Purple, also starring Fantasia Barrino, Colman Domingo, Taraji P. Henson, and Ciara.

2022 Grammy Awards: Jon Batiste, Doja Cat, and Justin Bieber Lead Nominations

The Grammy Awards are returning to Los Angeles this winter, and many worthy contenders will be in the running for top prizes. Jon Batiste topped the list of nominees with a total of 11 nods, and he was closely followed by Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, and H.E.R. with eight each.

Batiste is a veteran jazz keyboardist, best known as bandleader and musical director on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. He owes most of his nominations—including album of the year—to his latest album We Are. He also received several nods for his work on the soundtrack for Pixar’s Soul, which already won him the Oscar for best original score.

Batiste was closely followed by Doja Cat, Justin Bieber, and H.E.R. with eight nominations each, and they’ll all be competing against each other in the album of the year category. The list of major contenders also includes Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo with seven nods, including album and record of the year.

Some of the songs competing in several major categories are Bieber’s “Peaches”, Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More”, Rodrigo’s “Drivers License’, Silk Sonic’s “Leave The Door Open”, and Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)”. We’ll get to see if any of them will be named record of the year when the Grammys return to L.A. on January 31st, 2022.

H.E.R. to Make Acting Debut in “The Color Purple” Adaptation

H.E.R. will be making her acting debut in Blitz Bazawule’s forthcoming adaptation of The Color Purple for Warner Bros.

The Oscar and four-time Grammy winner will be playing Squeak, who goes from a waitress to an aspiring singer and was previously played by Rae Dawn Chong in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie.

“There is so much I want to do. People don’t really get to see my comedic and fun side, except for when I’m impersonating my aunt,” she said, with a laugh. “But I definitely want to do a lot more voice-overs, and comedy, but also some serious roles,” the 23-year-old singer previously expressed her desire to get into acting with Variety.

She joins Corey Hawkins (In The Heights, The Tragedy of Macbeth) in the movie which is being directed by Bazawule. The director is best known for his work on Beyoncé’s “Black is King”.

Oprah Winfrey, who made her acting debut in Spielberg’s The Color Purple, will be producing with Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. Executive producing are Alice Walker, Rebecca Walker, Kristie Macosko Krieger, Carla Gardini, and Mara Jacobs.

The Color Purple is set to be released on December 20, 2023.

Beyoncé and Taylor Swift were two of the artists leading this year’s Grammy nominations, and they ended up making history at the ceremony. Beyoncé topped the list of winners with a total of four awards, while Taylor Swift won her third album of the year prize with Folklore.

Beyoncé’s latest wins brought her career Grammy total to 28, making her the most rewarded female artist in the history of this ceremony. She won two Grammys with the remix of Megan Thee Stallion’s “Savage” and collected additional two trophies for the best R&B performance with “Black Parade” and the best music video with “Brown Skin Girl”.

Taylor Swift walked away with only one Grammy, but it was a big achievement. She collected the album of the year trophy with Folklore, making this her third win in this coveted category. Record of the year award was won by Billie Eilish for the song “Everything I Wanted”.

Eric Church, Jaszmine Sullivan, and H.E.R. to Sing at Super Bowl

New music stars have been added to the lineup for Super Bowl LV.

The NFL announced that country star Eric Church and R&B singer Jazmine Sullivan will sing the National Anthem and Grammy-winning R&B artist H.E.R will sing “America the Beautiful” during the pregame festivities on February 7.

The game takes place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida and the Weeknd is the Halftime performer.

Previous Super Bowl National Anthem performers include Whitney Houston, Gladys Knight, Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Demi Lovato, Luke Bryan, Diana Ross, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Joel, Pink, Jordin Sparks, Idina Menzel, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, and Neil Diamond.

Church has seven ACM awards, four CMA awards, and 10 Grammys. His most recent album, Desperate Man, is nominated for a 2021 Grammy in the Best Country Album category. Sullivan eight Grammy nominations and earlier this month she released her fourth studio album Heaux Texas.

Past “America the Beautiful” performers include Yolanda Adams, Leslie Odom Jr, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and Alicia Keys. H.E.R has won two Grammys and is up for another in 2021 for her single “I Can’t Breathe”.

Deaf Rapper and recording artist Warren “Wawa” Snipe will perform the National Anthem and “America the Beautiful” in American Sign Language on behalf of the National Association of the Deaf.

2020 Soul Train Awards: H.E.R. Scores Eight Nominations

The music industry’s awards season is heating up and Soul Train Awards is the latest ceremony to unveil its list of nominations. H.E.R. is leading the way with a total of eight nominations and she’s in the running in the majority of the main categories.

H.E.R. and YG scored the song of the year nomination with their collaboration “Slide”, but their competition is pretty strong. This category also includes Beyoncé’s “Black Parade”, Chloe X Halle’s “Do It”, and Chris Brown & Young Thug collaboration “Go Crazy”.

H.E.R. is also competing for best collaboration, best songwriting, and best video awards with “Slide”, in addition to scoring two more nominations with Skip Marley collaboration “Slow Down” and another one with the solo song “I Can’t Breathe”.

The list of major contenders at this year’s Soul Train Awards also includes Chris Brown with seven nominations, Beyoncé and Young Thug with six nods, and Chloe X Halle, Summer Walker, and Usher with five each. The ceremony will take place on November 29th, with Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold co-hosting the event.

Adele Gushes About Her “Saturday Night Live” Hosting Gig

Saturday Night Live is usually hosted by beloved actors and comedians, but our favorite singers manage to sneak in every once in a while. Adele is the latest recording artist to score a hosting gig on this long-lived sketch show, scheduled to take place this week.

Adele appeared on Saturday Night Live on two separate occasions, in 2008 and 2015. She was a musical guest both times, but her upcoming appearance will be extra-special since she’s taking on hosting duties for the first time.

Surprisingly enough, Adele won’t be the musical guest on this upcoming episode of SNL. H.E.R. will be in charge of performing, and Adele said she’s beside herself to see her performing live. It’s unclear if Adele will use her performance to tease new music or any other projects, but we’ll have to wait until Saturday to see for ourselves.

Lizzo just took a DNA test, and it turns out she’s an eight-time Grammy-nominated artist!

The “Juice” singer topped the list of Grammy Award nominations with a total of eight nods. Lizzo will be competing in several major categories at this year’s ceremony, including album of the year with the deluxe edition of her latest LP Cuz I Love You. Her chart-topping hit “Truth Hurts” scored three nominations in categories record of the year, song of the year, and best pop solo performance.

The list of major contenders at the upcoming ceremony also includes Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X with six nods each. They were closely followed by Ariana Grande, H.E.R. and Eilish’s brother and songwriting partner Finneas O’Connell, who all scored five nominations.

The 2020 Grammy Awards will take place on January 26th at Staples Center in Los Angeles, with Alicia Keys returning to host the ceremony for the second time in a row.
