]]>Kathleen Kennedy, the producer behind the franchise, reportedly wants to make “big, bold” changes including having a woman in the starring role. Waller-Bridge is already part of the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, in which she reportedly plays a sidekick to archaeology professor Indiana Jones.
It remains unclear if Waller-Bridge’s character, described as a female version of Jones, will take the spotlight in Indiana Jones 5 or if the movie will set the stage for her to star in a potential sixth entry in the franchise.
Indiana Jones 5 will serve as the sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. The movie has been in development for some time now and saw a number of behind-the-scenes changes. This included creator Steven Spielberg stepping down as a director and taking the producer role while James Mangold took over the directorial duties.
The movie was initially set to hit theaters in 2019, but several setbacks, including Harrison Ford’s injury, forced the studio to move the release date to July 29, 2022. The filming kicked off in June 2021 and is still underway.

]]>The news was later confirmed by Disney’s spokesperson, who said in a statement that the movie will continue production regardless although the filming schedule is set to be reconfigured.
Indiana Jones 5 started filming in early June, eyeing a July 29, 2022 release date. It will be the first movie in the franchise that won’t be directed by Steven Spielberg, with James Mangold (Logan) taking the helm. Spielberg remains involved as a producer.
The development of Indiana Jones 5 began shortly after the release of the fourth movie Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Initially, the movie entered pre-production in 2016 but was met with several delays and script changes. In early 2020, Spielberg stepped down as a director and brought in Mangold, who wrote an entirely new script to direct from.
Besides Ford, the cast of Indiana Jones 5 will also include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen, and Thomas Kretschmann in undisclosed roles. John Rhys-Davies (Sallah) and Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood) previously expressed interest in reprising their role from earlier films, but it remains unknown whether they are actually attached to the project.

]]>Filming of the movie was supposed to start in April 2019 in the United Kingdom, but has reportedly been pushed back several months and could even see a year-long setback. Sources close to the situation have said that some of the cast members have been already notified about the filming schedule change.
The main reason for Indiana Jones 5 delay is the script. There is still no final draft, with Jonathan Kasdan, son of the original Raiders of the Lost Ark writer Lawrence Kasdan, being attached to the project. David Koepp previously passed on the chance to pen the script for the movie.
Still, it looks like Indiana Jones fans shouldn’t be worried about the involvement of director Steven Spielberg and actor Harrison Ford, both reportedly remain committed to the project.
The thing that causes a bit of worry, however, is that this isn’t the first time Indiana Jones 5 has been delayed. The original release date for the movie has been previously set for 2019.
