Sarah Michelle Gellar wants you to give the new Buffy the Vampire Slayer a chance.

The 41-year-old played the title character in the Joss Whedon series which ran from 1997 to 2003.

It was confirmed in July that Whedon would be producing a remake of the much-loved show —without the original cast — much to the hesitancy and anger of the series’ fans.

But perhaps their opinion will change now that the reboot has been endorsed by none other than Sarah herself.

The former slayer told PEOPLE: “At the end of the day, it’s all about great storytelling. If a story lives on, then I think it should be told in any incarnation it can be told in.”

Her co-star and on-screen love interest, David Boreanaz, agreed, saying to fans at New York Comic Con, “Come on, guys. It’s a good thing. Let’s just embrace [it]. I’m very happy for them. They want to embrace a new generation, something new… I’m all for it. I think it’s fantastic. Good for them. I hope that it becomes huge and successful.”

Let’s hope the fans change their minds.

Those vampires won’t slay themselves.

A whole 20 years after being introduced to Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the show is getting a reboot.

The original series — based on a movie of the same name — was the brainchild of Joss Whedon and lasted 7 seasons starring Sarah as the titular character, as well as David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan, Michelle Trachtenberg, and James Marsters.

Whedon will return as executive producer for the reboot being made by Fox 21 TV Studios, while Charmed and Alias writer, Monica Owusu-Breen, has been tapped as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner.

The pair has previously worked together on ABC’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which Whedon co-created and executive produced/directed and Owusu-Breen co-executive produced.

The new Slayer is expected to be African American, with the series once again using supernatural metaphors for issues facing society.

What would Buffy do?

If we weren’t feeling old before, here’s a reminder that Buffy the Vampire Slayer hit our screens 21 years ago!

Long before vampires sparkled in the sun, Sarah Michelle Gellar kicked butt as Buffy Summers whose mission was to rid her hometown of Sunnydale of evil vampires, demons, and other dark forces.

The series, created by Joss Whedon, ran between 1997 and 2003 and was praised for its depiction of strong female leads.

Now, Buffy herself has acknowledged the feminism of the show by putting an anniversary post on Instagram that also featured some never-before-seen photos from the set of the supernatural dramedy.

Sarah partly captioned the post with, “I have always believed that the world is changed by your example, not by your opinion,” which her character proved many times and still serves as great advice.

Other stars of the series also paid tribute, including Charisma Carpenter who played Cordelia Chase:

And Buffy’s little sister, Dawn, portrayed by Michelle Trachtenberg:

We think that 21 years later is a great time for the cast to start thinking about revisiting Sunnydale… but until then, we’ll be rewatching our BTVS boxsets.

As you may recall, Joss Whedon was initially hired by Warner Bros. to write and direct the Batgirl movie in March 2017, and wasn’t connected to the Justice League movie at all. After Zack Snyder took a break from Justice League due to a family tragedy, Whedon stepped in to finish the work and the Batgirl project seemed neglected. Now it looks like DC’s superhero team movie will be his only impact on the DC Extended Universe.

Joss Whedon released a statement on Thursday, revealing that he won’t be writing or directing the Batgirl movie.

“Batgirl is such an exciting project, and Warners/DC such collaborative and supportive partners, that it took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” – Whedon. “I’m grateful to [DC president Geoff Johns and Warners Picture Group president Toby Emmerich] and everyone who was so welcoming when I arrived, and so understanding when I, uh, is there a sexier word for ‘failed?’”

Although this seems like a legitimate reason, there are reports which say it might not be the only one. According to The Hollywood Reporter, sources in the industry say “that even as Whedon faced story issues, in today’s cultural entertainment environment, a male filmmaker may have faced greater public scrutiny if he were to have tackled a movie with such feminist importance such as Batgirl or Wonder Woman, much like a white filmmaker would have seen backlash taking on the Black Panther movie.”

There are no reports whether Warner Bros. studio will continue with the Batgirl movie development and find another director.

Joss Whedon, on the other hand, will not have problems finding another job, with Netflix and Apple being the prime contenders to finance his next project.

Firefly, Joss Whedon’s 2002 space Western drama, only lasted for 14 episodes, but it still managed to win a Primetime Emmy Award and get a cult following from the fans. After the show was canceled by Fox network, Firefly gained exposure through reruns and DVDs, being labeled later as one of the best space sci-fi series in the history of television. The fans of the show are still hoping for a revival, but until that happens, they will get a series of new novels which will be officially part of the canon with Joss Whedon serving as a consulting editor. The novels will be published by Titan Books.

“[I am] delighted to be bringing new, official stories to fans of a show that has continued to grow in popularity over the years, finding new audiences in an unprecedented way. Firefly is a hugely unique IP and Titan Books is excited to be becoming part of its legacy.” – said commissioning editor Cat Camacho.

Titan Books also revealed release dates, synopsizes and authors for each of the novels.
The first of the novels, Firefly: Big Damn Hero, will be out in October 2018 and is written by Nancy Holder.

“Captain Malcolm Reynolds finds himself in a dangerous situation after being kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats.”

The second one is written by James Lovegrove and will be titled Firefly: The Magnificent Nine with the release set for March 2019.

“Jayne receives a distress call from his ex Temperance McCloud that leads the Serenity crew to danger on a desert moon.”

Finally, the third novel titled Firefly: Generations will come from the pen of Tim Lebbon and is set for release in October 2019.

“The discovery of the location of one of the legendary Ark ships that brought humans from Earth to the ‘Verse promises staggering salvage potential, but at what cost? River Tam thinks she might know …”
