Another A-list talent has set a project at the streamer. Apatow will direct and produce the untitled comedy. He’ll also be co-writing the script with Pam Brady. Barry Mendel will serve as executive producer.

Per Variety, Apatow’s film will follow a group of “actors and actresses stuck inside a pandemic bubble at a hotel attempting to complete a film.”According to sources Netflix is fast-tracking the project and is set to meet with actors as soon as possible.

The timely comedy marks Apatow’s first feature project that isn’t at Universal, which was his home since his first big-screen hit The 40-Year Old Virgin in 2005. Universal and Apatow’s most recent collab on the comedy The King of Staten Island. 

Apatow’s other directing credits include Knocked Up, Funny People, Trainwreck, and HBO’s The Zen Diaries Of Garry Shandling.

“We tried to make one and thanks to the Sony hack you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it,” Rogan said. “It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it. I think we probably wanted too much money. Studios, they don’t like giving away money. Weird thing.”

The 2014 big Sony hack revealed an email from producer Judd Apatow to the studio, in which he expresses excitement about making a sequel. “I am so glad we are so close to getting Pineapple Express 2 figured out. I am very excited to make this thing real. We are very inspired creatively on this one. We have hilarious ideas. It is gonna be awesome,” the email said.

As was later revealed, the production asked Sony for a budget of $50 million but the studio agreed only to a $45 million budget. The parties never reached an agreement and the project never took off.

The first look at The King of Staten Island is here ahead of its summer release. The film, set to open SXSW before a theatrical release, will now premiere June 12 on digital platforms.

The semi-autobiographical comedy is based in part on Davidson’s own life. It also stars Maude Apatow, Marisa Tomei, Bel Powley, Steve Buscemi, Pamela Adlon, Lou Wilson, and Moises Arias.

“Scott (Davidson) has been a case of arrested development ever since his firefighter father died when he was seven. He’s now reached his mid-20s having achieved little, chasing a dream of becoming a tattoo artist that seems far out of reach. As his ambitious younger sister (Apatow) heads off to college, Scott is still living with his exhausted ER nurse mother (Tomei) and spends his days smoking weed, hanging with the guys — Oscar (Ricky Velez), Igor (Arias) and Richie (Wilson) — and secretly hooking up with his childhood friend Kelsey (Powley). But when his mother starts dating a loudmouth firefighter named Ray (Bill Burr), it sets off a chain of events that will force Scott to grapple with his grief and take his first tentative steps toward moving forward in life.”

While details on the logline are being under wraps, it is known that the feature is a coming-of-age comedy set in New York and is a semi-autobiographical story of Davidson growing up in Staten Island.

Tomei, who plays Aunt May in the current Spider-Man features, will play Davidson’s mother. Bel Powley and Bill Burr are also on the call sheet.

Apatow is the founder of Apatow productions through which he developed a variety of television series including the acclaimed Girls. He also directed The 40-Year-Old Virgin(2005), Knocked Up (2007), Funny People (2009), and This Is 40 (2012).

Davidson currently stars on Saturday Night Live.

The comedy is set to shoot this summer in New York City and is scheduled for a June 19, 2020, release.

Multiple outlets report that HBO has pulled the plug on its comedy series, Crashing. The series, which is currently in its third season, will air its final episode this week.

The announcement was made by series director Judd Apatow during a recent appearance on Conan.

“Well, it’s not really canceled,” Apatow told host Conan O’Brien. “We’re just going to stop making it.”

“What stopped you from making more?” O’Brien asked.

“They told us we should never make any more,” Apatow replied and added, “We were very happy that we got to tell the story that we wanted to tell, and we do have an ending.”

Pete Holmes created Crashing. He also starred as a fictionalized version of himself, bring to the screen stories of his own experienced as a comedian. The series follows Holmes as he decides to pursue a career in stand up comedy after his wife cheats on him and divorces him.

Apatow and Holmes executive produced the series alongside Judah Miller, Igor Srubshchik and Oren Brimer.

The still untitled project will be co-produced by Stoller under his Global Solutions banner and Judd Apatow’s Apatow Productions banner. Stoller will also direct from a screenplay co-written by himself and lead Eichner. 

Eichner tweeted Tuesday “Excited, terrified, completely in shock and PROUD as hell to announce this movie. We’re making a big, new romantic comedy for Universal!!!! AHHHHHHH!!!”

Eichner is currently developing his first comedy special for Netflix. His other credits include American Horror Story, Friends from College and Emmy nominated Billy on the Street. His upcoming projects include voicing the character of Timon in Jon Favreau’s The Lion King and starring in Noelle opposite Anna Kendrick.

Not much is known about the upcoming Davidson-Appatow collaboration at this point in time, and it’s title is yet to be announced. It is expected to start production in May or June this year.
