Law & Order will return for its 23rd season next year, and another amazing NYPD detective will soon join the force. Veep alum Reid Scott joined the long-running NBC police procedural as a series regular for its upcoming 23rd season.

The 23rd season of Dick Wolf’s mothership Law & Order drama will premiere on January 18, 2024, after facing many changes in recent years. The series regular Jeffrey Donovan recently left the show over creative differences after portraying Det. Frank Cosgrove and Scott is most likely stepping in to fill the empty slot that he left behind.

This replacement rings a bell, and it comes only one season after Mehcad Brooks was cast as Frank’s new partner Jalen Shaw, following Anthony Anderson’s departure from the series. Season 23 will still feature many familiar faces, including Sam Waterston (Grace & Frankie) as DA Jack McCoy, Hugh Dancy (Hannibal) as Nolan Price, and Camryn Manheim (The Practice) as Lt. Kate Dixon.

Reid Scott got his big break while starring on HBO’s political satire Veep, and he’s been pretty busy after this series ended its run. He most recently appeared in acclaimed comedies The Afterparty and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and is attached to the upcoming rom-com The Idea of You starring Anne Hathaway.

The Law & Order: SVU team is set to lose a valuable member.

After 12 years on the series, Kelli Giddish will be bidding farewell to her character, Detective Amanda Rollins. The All My Children star joined SVU in 2011, coinciding with Chris Meloni’s departure, and has had the third-longest tenure on the show.

“I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on Law & Order: SVU. Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the Law & Order family for the last 12 years,” Giddish said in a statement. “There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.”

Giddish will leave midway through the forthcoming season which is set to begin on September 22. It has been announced that the premiere episode will feature a cross-over with the original Law & Order, as well as Law & Order: Original Crime, marking the very first time that all three series have intersected.

After ending its 20-year, 456 episodes run 11 years ago, the original Law & Order will be returning to NBC with new episodes for Season 21.

Creator Dick Wolf spent years trying to get the original series back on air and Rick Eid will be serving as showrunner.

“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said Wolf to Variety. “This is mine.”

No cast or premiere date has been announced, but it’s expected to feature characters from the original series.

Law & Order has had over a dozen spinoffs and Law & Order: SVU, which premiered in 1999, has now outlasted the run of the original series and is in its 23rd season. Law & Order: Criminal Intent also had a long run on NBC and USA Network.

Most recently in the Law & Order universe, Chris Meloni has rejoined the franchise, starring in Law & Order: Organized Crime. NBC had ordered another Law & Order series for the 2021-2022 season titled Law & Order: For the Defense, but it ended up getting scrapped over the summer.
