Even though Perry and Richie, who currently both serve as judges on American Idol, don’t hail from the UK, their inclusion at this event doesn’t come as a huge shocker. In addition to knowing King Charles for years, Perry has served as an ambassador of his charity The British Asian Trust, while Richie was appointed the first chairman of the Global Ambassador Group for The Prince’s Trust in 2019.

According to BBC’s official statement, “The concert will celebrate a new chapter in the nation’s history, with themes of love, respect, and optimism, celebrating the four nations, their communities, and the Commonwealth.” It will be held on the grounds of Windsor Castle on May 7.

All Night Long will use some of Richie’s greatest hits in a live-action project for a theatrical release. The project is being produced by Richie and his manager Bruce Eshkowitz with Cavalry Media executives Dana Brunetti and Matt Del Piano. Pete Chiarelli (Crazy Rich Asians and the Proposal) is penning the script.

American Idol’s Lionel Richie sold the pitch to the studio in January. The film will have a similar feel to Mamma Mia, which was based on the song from Abba.

Musical movies have done well at the box office with Rami Malek’s performance of Freddie Mercury in 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody winning him an Oscar for best actor and grossing over $900 million globally. Elton John’s Rocketman starring Taron Egerton took home a Golden Globe and other musical titles that have done well include Jersey Boys, Rock of Ages, and Across the Universe.

Due to popular demand, Richie’s sold-out performance last month at Vegas’ Wynn Las Vegas will be followed by a new stage show titled Lionel Richie — Las Vegas. 

The iconic musician announced the news via his official Twitter page Monday. 

“Hello again Las Vegas,” Richie said in a statement. “I can’t wait to perform in one of the best music venues in the U.S. at the Encore Theater. This new show is going to be so much fun!”

The show will see Richie headline a three-night engagement at the Encore theater that will feature stories from throughout his career as well as his greatest hits.

Wynn president, Marilyn Spiegel added “Lionel Richie is an iconic performer and we are honored to have him debut an exclusive production at Wynn. We look forward to his return to the Encore Theater this spring.”

Tickets will go on sale for the public on September 20.

American country singer Luke Bryan went on Twitter and confirmed the news via video saying: “I’m so excited and proud to announce that I will be one of the three judges on ABC’s American Idol.” He also went on to call Lionel Richie his “hero”.

Lionel Richie also shared his excitement about joining the show in his statement following the announcement.
