Not much is known about the series and it hasn’t received an official title. What we do know is it will take place during the so-called Second Age, thousands of years prior to the event of The Lord of the Rings books and The Hobbit. The series will follow a new and familiar cast as they confront the re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.
The cast includes Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Robert Aramayo, Owain Arthur, Maxim Baldry, Nazanin Boniadi, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Trystan Gravelle, Sir Lenny Henry, Ema Horvath, Markella Kavenagh, Joseph Mawle, Tyroe Muhafidin, Sophia Nomvete, Lloyd Owen, Megan Richards, Dylan Smith, Charlie Vickers, Leon Wadham, Benjamin Walker, Daniel Weyman, and Sara Zwangobani.
“As Bilbo says, ‘Now I think I am quite ready to go on another journey’. Living and breathing Middle-earth these many months has been the adventure of a lifetime. We cannot wait for fans to have the chance to do so as well,” showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay said in a statement as reported by Variety.

]]>During an appearance at the Graham Norton Show, McKellen was asked to share his thoughts on the chance for someone else to play Gandalf on the TV show. “What do you mean, another Gandalf?” said the actor, before adding. “I haven’t said yes because I haven’t been asked. But are you suggesting that someone else is going to play it? Gandalf is over 7000 years old, so I’m not too old.”
Although seeing Ian McKellen in the role of Gandalf would be awesome, there isn’t a big chance for that to happen since Amazon will most likely look for a younger cast which doesn’t have ties with previous movies.
Andy Serkis, on the other hand, wouldn’t be so quick to jump on the opportunity. The actor, who portrayed Gollum in the movies, said he thinks a fresh take on the universe is a better thing.
“I don’t know if I’d want to go back into the Lord of the Rings realm,” he said. “I feel like I’ve spent a large chunk of my life doing that. I’ll say good luck and I think fresh eyes are probably a good thing.”
Although there are many unknowns about the Lord of the Rings TV show, we do know that it will be a prequel to The Fellowship of the Ring, with a multi-season order and a potential spin-off series. This will be Amazon’s attempt to parry HBO’s Game of Thrones and create an internationally recognizable series.
