Gotham Awards are usually the first major awards ceremony to kick off the Oscar season, and its list of nominees is finally in. The Lost Daughter and Passing, the feature directorial debuts of actresses Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rebecca Hall, are leading the way with five nods each.

Both movies are in the running for the biggest award of the ceremony—best feature. They’ll be competing against The Green Knight, Pig, and Test Pattern. The last movie is one of the major competitors with a total of three nominations, together with CODA and Red Rocket.

The Lost Daughter and Passing both owe most of their nominations to the amazing actresses that star in them. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley received nominations for their performances in The Lost Daughter, and they’ll be competing against Passing’s Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga in their respective categories. Gyllenhaal and Hall are also in the running in two categories together—breakthrough director and best screenplay.

Actress Kristen Stewart, director Jane Campion, and the cast of The Harder They Fall are set to receive tribute awards.

The Gotham Independent Film Awards return on November 29th.

Maggie Gyllenhaal and Ralph Fiennes have joined the independent drama Farnsworth House.

The indie feature is set in late 1940s Chicago. Gyllenhaal (The Kindergarten Teacher) is set to play Dr. Edith Farnsworth, whose project with the Bauhaus architect Mies Van Der Rohe, played by Fiennes, to build the first glass house led them into a love affair like none other.

Farnsworth House will be directed by Ricard Press, who will also be penning the screenplay. Gyllenhaal is producing with Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa though Bona Fide Productions.

“I am always looking for projects about real women, with complicated, interesting minds,” Gyllenhaal said. “They are far and few between and Farnsworth House is a rare find. In Edith Farnsworth is the opportunity to express a full and exciting spectrum of thoughts and feelings. But there is also the opportunity for the most exciting kind of artistic experience: a collaboration. Farnsworth House is a love story between two iconoclasts, two equally interesting players.”

Farnsworth House is currently in pre-produciton.
