After a lot of anticipation, this year’s award season is finally nearing its final chapter—the Academy Awards ceremony. The list of Oscar nominations is in, and David Fincher’s Netflix movie Mank is leading the way with a total of ten nods.

The Citizen Kane origin story is in the running for the biggest award of the night—best picture. The list of contenders in this category also includes The Father, Judas and the Black Messiah, Minari, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman, Sound of Metal, and The Trial of the Chicago 7.

David Fincher will also be in the running for the best director award, which looks more diverse than ever this year. Only five female directors have been nominated in this category in the past, so it’s quite refreshing to see Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell score nominations this time around. This is the first time two female directors received a nod the same year, and Zhao made history as the first woman of color to be nominated in this category.

The list of major contenders at this year’s ceremony will also include Sound of Metal, Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7, The Father, Minari, and Judas and the Black Messiah, which all received a total of six nominations. Promising Young Woman and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom were right behind with five nominations, but the later movie missed out on the best picture nod.

The 93rd Academy Awards will take place on April 25th, after a major shift caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony is expected to take place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, but we’re yet to learn more about its format.

The official trailer for David Fincher’s Mank has been released and it gives insight into Oscar-winning Citizen Kane screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz and the development of the Orson Welles classic.

Gary Oldman stars as the social critic and alcoholic screenwriter Mankiewicz, who revaluates 1930s Hollywood as he races to finish the Citizen Kane script.

In the trailer, Mankiewicz, who goes by Mank, is called “a court jester” and cautioned he’s “hunting dangerous game” in taking on William Randolph Hearst (Charles Dance), who Charles Foster Kane is partly based on. Welles (Tom Burke) asks if Mank is “ready and willing to hunt the great white whale,” and Mank responds, “Just call me Ahab.”

Also in the black and white drama are Arliss Howard, Lily Collins, Amanda Seyfried, Tuppence Middleton, Tom Pelphrey, Sam Troughton, Ferdinand Kingsley, and Toby Leonard Moore.

Citizen Kane was released in 1941 and the script for Mank was written by David Fincher’s late father Jack Fincher.

Mank will be released by Netflix in select domestic theaters in November before it is added to the streaming service globally on December 4.

Many consider Citizen Kane one of the greatest movies in history and its creation is now the subject of a new film by one of showbiz’s contemporary greats, David Fincher, and we finally get to see the first photos from it.

The film follows screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz who’s in the process of finishing writing the script for Orson Welles’ iconic film. The alcoholic screenwriter, known for his social criticism, is played by Gary Oldman. Other cast members are Tom Burke as Orson Welles, Amanda Seyfried as Marion Davies, Charles Dance as William Randolph Hearst, Lily Collins as Rita Alexander, Tuppence Middleton as Sara Mankiewicz, and many more.

The movie is produced by Netflix, which is now giving us a first look at the movie—and it looks stunning. The streaming giant posted pictures of the movie on its twitter account. The pictures show highly stylized black and white pictures, which play to the director’s talent.

Howard Jack Fincher, the director’s father, wrote the script for Mank prior to his death in 2003, which makes it a passion project for Fincher. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are responsible for the movie’s score. The duo has previously worked with Fincher and won an Academy Award for The Social Network score. He also reunites with production designer Donald Graham Burt. Erik Messerschmidt, who worked with Fincher on the Netflix series Mindhunter, is the cinematographer.

Netflix is yet to confirm an official release date, but it’s expected to come out in October.

After giving us two masterpieces with Netflix shows House of Cards and Mindhunter, David Fincher is gearing up to film his first original movie for this streaming platform. Black and white biopic Mank is inspired by the timeless classic Citizen Kane, and it will star Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman.

This project has been decades in the making, and it will tell the story of famed screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. He won an Oscar for Citizen Kane alongside Orson Welles, but two visionaries clashed loudly over the credit on this iconic film.

David Fincher has been dreaming about making this movie since the late ‘90s, but his insistence to shoot it in black and white eventually led to its fallout. Fortunately, Netflix has his back now and critically acclaimed director will start shooting his dream project later this fall.

Mank is probably one of the most personal movies of his career since it’s based on the screenplay written by his late father Howard Fincher. He served as Life Magazine’s bureau chief before passing away in 2003.
