Each year, this day sees the band giving a rendition of the national anthem before the game. But as this year Major League Baseball is played with no crowd, guitarist Kirk Hammett and frontman James Hetfield played their version of The Star-Spangled Banner virtually from their Metallica HQ studio rather than coming physically to AT&T Park. The duo played wearing the Giants shirts, with Hammett taking the lead supported by Hetfield.

In addition to the anthem rendition, bassist Robert Trujillo delivered the ceremonial first pitch of the game. Trujillo had thrown the ball in a distant parking lot.

“To be able to support the hometown team in the best possible way, it’s a huge honor,” Hammett said before the game. “The thing about the anthem is that musically, it’s not difficult to play, but when you execute it, you have to execute it perfectly, you can’t mess up any notes, because everyone knows that tune.”

Now, the metal giants have announced the first show of 2020 will take place on August 29. The show will be a prerecorded performance taken in a secret location and shown on outdoor and drive-in movie theaters across the country as part of the Encore Drive-In Nights’ series.

Tickets to the shows will be available from August 12. Each ticket admits one car with up to six people and will include four digital downloads of S&M2. Metallica’s Fifth Member fan club members will get an exclusive pre-sale.

Metallica is the third band to perform on the Encore Drive-In series and the first non-country artists to do so. The first two performers were Garth Brooks who played in June and Blake Shelton who played in July.

“Metallica is going to blow the top off of this thing and take it to a whole new level,” said Walter Kinzie, CEO of Encore Live, in a statement.

The show saw the metal legends reunite with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, with whom they have made the S&M album and show in 1999. It is a three-hour concert, split into two parts and it was conducted by Edwin Outwater with a special appearance by Michael Tilson Thomas. The band performed on a revolving circular stage surrounded by 75 orchestra players in front of 16,000 people at the new Chase Center in San Francisco.

Metallica’s drummer, Lars Ulrich, has recently told Kerrang! About his experience on the show “The Anesthesia bass solo was incredible. The way the fans reacted to that was goosebump-city. I loved the dare of playing Iron Foundry. I loved revisiting songs we don’t play so often like The Outlaw Torn and The Call Of Ktulu.”

It is generally accepted by many people that Black Sabbath were the original creators of heavy metal. They started out as a blues band and then changed course when they saw people queueing outside of a movie theater to watch a horror movie. At that moment, Ozzy Osbourne decided that he wanted to make music that scares people.

It is therefore not particularly surprising that many metal musicians have a love of horror. Metallica’s Kirk Hammett is a prime example. Speaking at Toronto’s “Rockstars In Cars” series, Hammet said: “I’ve just got to get my s**t together. I have to prioritize, and at this time, music means so much to me and is an obvious strength for me. But I think I could make a really incredible horror film. One, I need to find the time. Two, I need to find someone else’s money.”

He added: “I already have the soundtrack, so part of the work is already done. [Scoring it] would be a huge pleasure for me.”

The S&M2 anniversary concerts will take place at the Chase Center in San Francisco on September 6 and 8. They will then be featured at 3,000 movie theaters around the world on October 9.

The first Symphony & Metallica aka S&M took place over two nights in 1999 and were conducted by Michael Kamen. This year’s commemorative concerts will see the group perform tunes from the original S&M shows, as well as new songs. The event will be conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas, who is presently the music director at the San Francisco Symphony.

Tickets go on sale August 7.

During an interview with Metal Hammer, Hammett admitted that he has a growing pile of solo material which he might share in the future. The twist is that it is not metal so fans will be in for a complete surprise.

“One of these days when it feels right… I still feel I have so much to give Metallica. When that feels more complete, maybe I’ll think about doing that other stuff,” he revealed.

Deep Purple’s Roger Glover and Ian Paice were tasked with introducing the band, with Glover using the opportunity to recall the first time he heard the band.

“In the early ’80s, we were kind of riding high, doing a big festival in England,” – said Glover in his speech. “I heard this band backstage — well, they were on stage; I was backstage — and I thought, ‘Umm, who’s this?’ Metallica. I’d heard the name, didn’t know anything about them. I went on the side of the stage to have a look and I thought, ‘Yeah, there’s something happening here.’ I’ll tell you why: because the audience was singing every word they sang. And that’s what impressed me. When you touch that many people with your music, there’s something special going on.”

After the introduction by Glover and Paice, Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo took the stage where they were presented with the award by King Carl XVI Gustaf.

“Who would have thought, when Metallica started this musical journey 37 years ago, that one day we would be standing in front of both musical royalty and actual royalty, accepting one of the most prestigious prizes that can be bestowed upon musicians,” said Ulrich upon receiving the award.

The band also revealed that they will be donating the $125,000 prize money to All Within My Hands Foundation.

The ceremony also included several Swedish musicians like Ghost, Candlemass, Vargas & Lagola Dennis Lyxzen, Moneybrother and Tuva Syvertsen covering some of Metallica’s most famous songs.
