Parasite has made history last week when it became the first foreign-language movie to nab the Best Picture Award at the Oscars alongside the awards for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film. Apart from the honor, winning is predictably doing good for its revenues.

Variety reports that the movie earned 5.5 million dollars on the weekend following the win. It marks an increase of 234% in the box office. It surpassed last year’s Green Book as the biggest post-Oscars increase of the decade. Overall the domestic box office of Parasite stands at 44 million dollars while worldwide it earned 175 million dollars.

Parasite, which deals with social inequalities in South Korea, is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of the year with 99% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is now also being developed into a limited series that will reportedly delve deeper into the movie’s themes. Mark Ruffalo is said to star in this series – although it was not confirmed.

Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite won the Best Picture award at the Oscars and became the first foreign language speaking film to do so in the history of the Oscars. It also won the awards for Best Director, Best International Feature Film and Best Original Screenplay. Now, HBO is moving on with the development of its Parasite TV series.

Reports claim that the actor that the network wants to see as the lead in the series is Mark Ruffalo. According to the reports, Bong has already been in touch with the actor but the negotiations have not yet started. Although Ruffalo is recognized these days mainly with his role in the MCU movies as the Hulk, he is known for his political and social tendencies in the picking of his roles — so it seems Parasite is a logical choice for him.

HBO’s Parasite is set to be a limited series with five or six episodes. Bong will write the script and will serve as a producer. Adam Mckay will direct and co-produce.

In response to reports made on Collider, HBO released the following statement: “to speculate on any characters or casting is wildly premature at this point in the show’s development.”

Parasite was one of the dark horses at this year’s Academy Awards, but that didn’t stop it from winning the race. The South Korean social satire pulled off a major upset at the ceremony and made history as the first foreign-language film to win best picture award.

Parasite managed to come out victorious against more obvious front runners, including 1917, Joker, and The Irishman. The Best Picture Award wasn’t its only big win. Bong Joon Ho was awarded the Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Foreign Film.

Parasite was closely followed by Sam Mendes’ war epic 1917, which picked up three trophies in technical categories – sound mixing, visual effects, and best cinematography award for Roger Deakins. The list of major winners also included Ford v Ferrari, Joker and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, with two awards each.

When it comes to the acting categories, the winners were pretty obvious from the get-go with the four winning actors picking up corresponding awards at every major ceremony leading up to the Oscars – Joaquin Phoenix won the Best Leading Actor for Joker, Renée Zellweger was Best Leading Actress for her role in Judy, Laura Dern (Marriage Story) won the Best-supporting actress award, and Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) the Best Supporting-actor award.

The 92nd Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on February 9th, without a host for the second time in a row.

Dozens of impressive films premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, but only one could walk away with Palme d’Or. The biggest award of the festival went to the South Korean director Joon-ho Bong, who did a tremendous job with his latest film Parasite.

President of the jury, Alejandro González Iñárritu, spoke highly of this film during the post-ceremony press conference. He explained they came to a unanimous decision to reward it with Palme d’Or as they were all fascinated by this project from the very first moment they saw it.

According to its official synopsis, Parasite centers on a family that “takes a peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous parks for their livelihood until they get entangled in an unexpected incident.” It serves as a follow-up to Joon-ho Bong 2017 film Okja, which also competed for Palme d’Or.

This year’s Cannes Film Festival took place from May 14th to May 25th, and it introduced the world to some of the most anticipated movies of the year, including Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino and A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick.
