Prodigal Son won’t return to Fox for season three. The news was confirmed by the network earlier this week. This means that the final episode of procedural drama’s second season, which is set to air on May 18th, will also serve as the series finale.

Prodigal Son stars Tom Payne as Malcolm Bright, a former member of the FBI and current NYPD profiler who has a unique ability to observe violent crimes from a killer’s perspective. This enables him to catch clues the police might have disregarded and solve cases. Still, Bright is conflicted about his talent as he believes it might have something to do with his father, Dr. Martin Whitly, a serial killer who committed twenty-three murders.

According to Vulture, the decision to ax Prodigal Son didn’t come lightly as the series had a devoted fan base. Still, the low ratings made it hard for the network to justify new episodes, prompting the cancellation.

It remains to be seen whether Prodigal Son remains shelved or the Warner Bros. TV, the studio responsible for the series, tries to shop it. One of the rumored destinations is streaming service HBO Max, which already has the first two seasons as part of its offer.

Following the news, several members of the cast and crew went on social media to react. This included Payne, who said that playing Malcolm has been “a was a joy and a privilege.”

This crime show centers on Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne), a criminal psychologist with a special talent to view crimes from the killer’s perspective. Part of the reason why he possesses this ability is the fact his father was the infamous serial killer known as “The Surgeon”.

Michael Sheen will return to the role of Bright’s father, who’s currently serving a sentence in an asylum. Zeta-Jones will join him in the role of Dr. Vivian Capshaw, who works at the Claremont Psychiatric Hospital.

Fox’s president of entertainment Michael Thorn announced her casting and set high expectations for her on-screen pairing with Sheen. “An extraordinary talent, Catherine Zeta-Jones is the perfect foil for the brilliant Michael Sheen. I can’t wait to see these two greats go head-to-head in a season that is bound to raise the bar set by an outstanding Season One,” said Thorn in a statement.
