Season 4 of S-x Education takes place after the closure of Moordale Secondary and shows some of its students transfer to Cavendish Sixth Form College, where they’re trying to adapt to its progressive vibe—from daily yoga in the communal garden to a group of kids who are popular for simply being kind.

Even though several fan favorites left the series ahead of Season 4, the show’s new logline confirmed the return of many core characters, including Otis (Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), Maeve (Emma Mackey), Adam (Connor Swindells), Aimee (Aimee-Lou Wood), Jackson (Kedar Williams-Stirling), and Viv (Chinenye Ezeudu).

Gillian Anderson, Mimi Keene, George Robinson, Alistair Petrie, and Samantha Spiro are also expected to return, and production of the new season is currently underway.

In September last year, Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season, but it’s shaping up to be rather unfamiliar based on the number of cast members who say they won’t be returning. 

The latest to add their name to the list? Rakhee Thakrar who plays English teacher Emily Sands. 

Speaking to the Daily Star Sunday, the 38-year-old actress said, “I’m not part of the new series. I can’t really talk about why.”

It’s possible that the reason could be plot-related as Thakrar continued: “But I’m so proud of the show and grateful to have been part of something so important. There is nothing bad about S-x Education.”

In June, Patricia Allison, who starred as Ola, announced that she would not be taking part in the show’s fourth season. Shortly after, Tanya Reynolds, who appeared as Ola’s girlfriend Lily, also revealed that she would not be featuring. 

“It’s just the natural progression of these shows – when you have such big ensemble casts and so many characters, I think you have to let a few older characters go to make way for newer ones, which is absolutely the right thing, the way it should happen,” Reynolds told Radio Times. 

Simone Ashley already announced in April that she would not be returning as Olivia due to her role in Bridgerton while no official statement has been made as yet about whether Ncuti Gatwa will reprise his role as Eric now that he has been cast as the lead in Doctor Who.

Otis Milburn has had a few significant relationships during the show’s three-season run, but his first was with Ola Nyman, played by Patricia Allison. As the series progresses, the pair go from a romantic relationship to cohabiting step-siblings as their parents begin to date.

With a fourth season announced in September last year, Allison has revealed that she won’t be in it…

“I absolutely have loved being on S-x Education so, so much and playing Ola, but unfortunately I won’t be joining the team for season four,” the 27-year-old said during an interview on a British radio show. “I’m just going to be doing some other little things. Some other opportunities have come up. I’ve been doing it for three years and I’ve genuinely loved it.”

Allison is not the only castmate who won’t be returning for Season 4.

Simone Ashley, who played Olivia throughout the show’s run, announced that she was leaving due to her starring in Bridgerton. It is also possible that Ncuti Gatwa’s role as the lead in Doctor Who could affect his playing Eric.

In the third season, Otis is having casual sex Eric and Adam (Connor Swindells) are officially dating. Otis’ mom has a baby on the way and the new headteacher (Jemima Kirke) tries to turn Moordale around. Aimee (Aimee Lou Wood) discovers feminism and Jackson (Connor Williams-Stirling) has a crush.

The cast also includes Alistair Petrie, Mimi Keene, Tanya Reynolds, Mikael Persbrandt, and Patricia Allison.

The series is created and executive produced by Laurie Nun. Jamie Campbell and Ben Taylor also executive produce.

With season three barely out the gate, fans of the Netflix series are already hoping that the streaming service will renew the show for a fourth round. 

Whether the entire cast would return, however, seems to be up in the air.

The romantic tension between Otis Milburn (played by Asa Butterfield) and smart but unconventional Maeve Wiley has been a continuous theme throughout the show’s three seasons. But Emma Mackey who stars as Maeve has now hinted that perhaps the couple won’t end up together after all as she may not return even if the series does.

“Sex Education is so momentous as a concept, as a show, and the cast is phenomenal. I genuinely care about them all a lot and I made lifelong friends,” she said. “But the bittersweet nature of it is that I also can’t be 17 my whole life.”

Despite playing teenagers, the majority of the cast are in their twenties, including Mackey who is already 25.

Netflix has yet to confirm whether Sex Education will return for a fourth season.
