The long-awaited sequel to Space Jam, Space Jam: A New Legacy, opened this weekend, with what will be a $32 million opening weekend, according to Variety.

The basketball film brought in $13.1 million from 3,965 locations on Friday, making it Warner Bros.’ largest pandemic debut and the largest pandemic opening for a family film. The film takes the top spot on this weekend’s domestic box office charts, taking the lead from Disney/Marvel’s Black Widow, which made $8 million on Friday and is projected to make $24.6 million. The superhero film stars Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh.

Space Jam: A New Legacy is directed by Malcolm D. Lee and stars LeBron James, Don Cheadle, and Zendaya. The film follows a fictionalized version of James who teams up with Looney Tunes characters in a basketball game to save his son from an evil AI.

Rounding out the Top 5 spots at the box office this weekend are Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, F9, and The Boss Baby: Family Business.

The year was 1996.

The Spice Girls were still together, Michael Jordan was the best basketball player in the world, and R. Kelly believed he could fly.

And the last two items on that list came together in the hit movie, Space Jam.

The film merged animation and live action to bring us a story about Michael being enlisted by Bugs Bunny and other members of the Looney Tunes to help them win an intergalactic basketball game against a team of mean aliens.

Fast forward 22 years where it has now been announced that a sequel to Space Jam is on the cards!

Michael Jordan is no longer the MVP — replaced, instead, by LeBron James who will also produce.

The film will also be produced by Black Panther filmmaker, Ryan Coogler, while Terence Nance of Random Acts of Flyness is set to direct.

Let’s hope they’ve been practising their shooting skills!
