In between all the Star Wars sequels, prequels, spinoffs and new trilogies, there is also room for a Star Wars animated series as well. Disney Channel has handed a straight-to-series order for Star Wars Resistance, an animated series which focuses on young pilot Kazuda Xiono. Resistance recruits Kazuda and sends him on a mission to spy on First Order. The series will chronicle the events prior to Episode VII.

If we are to judge by the first screenshot from the series, this will be an anime-inspired project.

Dave Filoni, who previously worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, created Star Wars Resistance and will also serve as an executive producer.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” said Filoni about the project. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

This new Star Wars animated series will introduce some new characters, but we will also get to see some familiar faces from the movies like Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma. Interesting thing is that Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, who star as Dameron and Captain Phasma in the movies respectively, will also voice the characters. The rest of the cast includes Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash (Community) and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).

The release date has yet to be released.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson recently shared some information about a new trilogy set in the Star Wars universe that he is developing for Disney. Although Johnson didn’t reveal any plot details and whether we will see some of the familiar characters from the franchise, he said that he is looking to capture the spirit of Star Wars in his trilogy.

“I’m looking at everything right now,” Johnson said during his interview with Digital Spy. “I’m honestly just in this very nice ‘OK, what is this thing going to be?’ phase. Really, the only goal I have is to think about how Star Wars made me feel as a kid. And that’s it. I’m trying to capture: what is that, if it’s not iconography that we recognize, necessarily, from the original trilogy? What captures that spirit? What can be that for a kid who’s never heard of Star Wars? It’s getting back to the very fundamental questions of what makes this what it is.”

The 44-year-old director previously revealed that he has already started working on the project, and wants to create the entire story of the trilogy before starting with the first installment.

“I’m gonna come up with the whole thing, the idea is to come up with one big story, but I know I’m gonna write and direct at least the first one,” he said during a recent interview with Collider.

Besides the Rian Johnson’s trilogy, Disney attached Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D. B. Weiss to also create a trilogy of movies.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the latest installment in the Star Wars saga, wasn’t the hit Disney expected it to be. Although the critics absolutely loved it, and the movie earned more than $1.3 billion, there were some fans that ended up being disappointed with The Last Jedi.

J.J. Abrams, who directed the movie’s predecessor The Force Awakens, believes that the reason for hate towards the movie is the fact that some Star Wars fans are “threatened by women”.

“Star Wars is a big galaxy, and you can sort of find almost anything you want to in Star Wars.” Abrams said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “If you are someone who feels threatened by women and needs to lash out against them, you can probably find an enemy in Star Wars. You can probably look at the first movie that George (Lucas) did and say that Leia was too outspoken, or she was too tough. Anyone who wants to find a problem with anything can find the problem. The internet seems to be made for that.”

Since Abrams will come back to the franchise again and serve as a director for Star Wars: The Last Jedi sequel, he was also asked whether the current disapproval of The Last Jedi will affect his vision and have an effect on the movie.

“Not in the least.” he responded. “There’s a lot that I would like to say about it, but I feel like it’s a little early to be having the Episode IX conversation… I will say that the story of Rey and Poe and Finn and Kylo Ren – and if you look, there are three men and one woman, to those that are complaining that there are too many women in Star Wars – their story continues in a way that I couldn’t be more excited about and cannot wait for people to see.”

There you have it. If you thought The Last Jedi was good, there is more of the same coming. If not, well, there isn’t much you can do.
