In between all the Star Wars sequels, prequels, spinoffs and new trilogies, there is also room for a Star Wars animated series as well. Disney Channel has handed a straight-to-series order for Star Wars Resistance, an animated series which focuses on young pilot Kazuda Xiono. Resistance recruits Kazuda and sends him on a mission to spy on First Order. The series will chronicle the events prior to Episode VII.

If we are to judge by the first screenshot from the series, this will be an anime-inspired project.

Dave Filoni, who previously worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, created Star Wars Resistance and will also serve as an executive producer.

“The idea for Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” said Filoni about the project. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”

This new Star Wars animated series will introduce some new characters, but we will also get to see some familiar faces from the movies like Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma. Interesting thing is that Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie, who star as Dameron and Captain Phasma in the movies respectively, will also voice the characters. The rest of the cast includes Christopher Sean (Days of Our Lives), Suzie McGrath (East Enders), Scott Lawrence (Legion), Myrna Velasco (Elena of Avalor), Josh Brener (Silicon Valley), Donald Faison (Scrubs), Bobby Moynihan (DuckTales), Jim Rash (Community) and Rachel Butera (Tammy’s Tiny Tea Time).

The release date has yet to be released.
