This newly introduced award is meant to recognize an artist’s unwavering dedication and notable contributions to the field of independent film. Joana Vicente, Sundance Institute’s CEO, said it’s an honor to recognize Nolan with the inaugural award and described him as a prodigious artist whose singular talent and remarkable body of work have made him one of the most respected filmmakers of our time.

Nolan’s breakout hit Memento premiered at Sundance two decades ago, and he can’t wait to return to the festival.

“Presenting Memento at the Sundance Film Festival marked a pivotal moment in my career, this award is a full circle moment and testament to the extraordinary influence of independent filmmaking,” said Nolan in a statement.

Nolan went a long way since breaking into Hollywood in 2000 with Memento. He found mainstream success with The Dark Knight trilogy starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and scored a total of five Oscar nominations, including two best picture nods for Inception and Dunkirk.

The news was announced during the festival’s annual awards ceremony in Park City, Utah. 

According to festival executive director Keri Putnam the UK filmmaker Jackson, who served as director of the Sundance Institute’s documentary film program for the past six years, beat out 700 candidates for the gig. 

“Tabitha is fiercely devoted to independent artists, has been a visionary member of the Sundance Institute’s leadership team for the last 6 years. Her authenticity, experience and perspective will serve her well in leading the festival forward as a beacon for independent artists and audiences,” Putnam said.

“I founded Sundance Institute with the clear mission of celebrating and supporting independent artists,” Robert Redford added in a statement. “And the festival is the platform where we can showcase their stories. As we approach our 40th anniversary, I’m pleased to have Tabitha lead us as we move into the future and meet the next generation of artists and their stories.”

Jackson will succeed outgoing director John Cooper, who served as the Festival’s director for the past 11 years.

Sundance festival sales record was previously held by The Birth of a Nation, and this sale was obviously somewhat of a prank since Palm Springs surpassed it by only 69 cents after being sold for $17,500,000.69 to Neon and Hulu.

After the sale became official, Samberg released a statement alongside his fellow producers, celebrating the record-breaking success of their latest project.

“We spent over 85 million dollars of our own money on this movie, WE ARE TAKING A BATH on this deal. We hope NEON and Hulu are happy but we definitely have a lot of explaining to do to our families,” reads the statement by the Party Over Here team.
