Many young actresses competed for the role of Supergirl in DC Universe, and Milly Alcock quickly emerged as one of the front-runners. After a tense audition process, House of the Dragon star was eventually cast as the next Kara Zor-El in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe.

Alcock starred in several Australian dramas throughout her teenage years, but it took a while before she got her big break. That moment finally came in 2022, when she played the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen in House of the Dragon and received a Critics’ Choice Award nod for her role.

Alcock has been searching for her next juicy role since Season 1 wrapped up, and she’s now gearing up for the biggest challenge of her career. She’ll play Kara Zor-El/Supergirl in the DC Universe, and she’s expected to appear in another DC-based project before leading her standalone movie Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

This project is still in the early stages of development and it’s being written by Ana Nogueira. James Gunn previously described her adaptation as “above and beyond anything I hoped it would be.”

Alcock defeated the likes of Emilia Jones and Meg Donnelly to be cast as Supergirl, and it remains to be seen if she’ll make her debut in Superman: Legacy alongside David Corenswet.

Since 2012, the CW has created its own DC universe, the Arrowverse, Starting with Arrow and later with several other shows and spin-offs. Arrow itself has ended last season but the other shows are still going strong.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected all the shows, with The Flash, Batwoman, and Supergirl forced to end their season early. Furthermore, the pandemic delayed production of the new seasons causing the network to move their fall schedule to 2021. This, alongside several cast changes and new additions to the universe, makes the Arrowverse look a little different this year.

Now the network finally releases the official release dates for four of the shows. The second season of Batwoman is set to begin on Sunday, January 17th. The fourth season of Black Lightning is set for Monday, February 8th. The seventh season of The Flash and the debut of the new Superman & Lois series are set for Tuesday, February 23rd.

The two remaining shows, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow, will arrive later on and they still don’t have an official release date. Legends of Tomorrow typically premieres later than the other shows. The sixth season of Supergirl, which is set to be the last, is held back due to the lead actress Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy.

The CW series Supergirl had a rocky journey from day one. It premiered on CBS and was almost canceled after its first season. Eventually, it was moved to The CW and gained popularity, becoming one of the fan favorites in the Arrowverse. Last week, fans got some bad news as the network announced that the upcoming season of the show will be its last.

Prominent among the cast and crew that have expressed their love for the show and for the experience of making it, is filmmaker Kevin Smith who directed several episodes of the series. On his show Fatman Beyond, smith talked with his co-host Marc Bernardin about the show’s ending and said that he had the time of his life working on the show.

“Working on that show was some of the best times I’ve had in my life, professionally and personally,” Smith said. “I’m so glad that show exists. I loved it before I directed on it, just thought, ‘God, her relationship with her sister is so beautiful.'”

He went on to compliment the show’s star Melissa Benoist on her professionalism. “She was always wonderful,” he said.

Smith also emphasized he would love to direct one of the series’ final episodes.

Supergirl, starring Melissa Benoist, will be flying off The CW after its upcoming sixth season.

Production on the sixth and final season is set to start later this month, with storylines already being developed for the last 20 episodes. The network aims to premiere the sixth season sometime in 2021.

The series debuted on CBS in October 2015 before moving to The CW for Season 2.

“To say it has been an honor portraying this iconic character would be a massive understatement. Seeing the incredible impact the show has had on young girls around the world has always left me humbled and speechless. She’s had that impact on me, too. She’s taught me strength I didn’t know I had, to find hope in the darkest of places, and that we are stronger when we’re united. What she stands for pushes all of us to be better. She has changed my life for the better, and I’m forever grateful,” Benoist wrote on Instagram.

“I’m so excited that we get to plan our conclusion to this amazing journey, and I cannot wait for you to see what we have in store. I promise we’re going to make it one helluva final season.”

The most recent season of Supergirl also starred Chyler Leigh, Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair, and David Harewood, with special guest star Jon Cryer.

Supergirl was a part of CW’s Arrowverse, which lost its first member Arrow at the beginning of this year. The shows still remaining in the Arrowverse are The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Black Lightning, Batwoman, and Superman and Lois.
