After four John Wick films, this action franchise is expanding even further, with several spinoff films and series in the works. The Continental will be the first to see the light of day, and Peacock just dropped the first teaser trailer for this highly-anticipated series.

According to its official logline, The Continental will “explore the origin behind the iconic hotel-for-assassins centerpiece of the John Wick universe through the eyes and actions of a young Winston Scott, as he’s dragged into the Hell-scape of 1970’s New York City to face a past he thought he’d left behind.”

Colin Woodell will play the lead role in this project, while the rest of the cast will include Ayomide Adegun, Peter Greene, Mel Gibson, Ben Robson, Hubert Point-Du Jour, Jessica Allain, Mishel Prada, and Nhung Kate. It was developed by Greg Coolidge, Kirk Ward, and Shawn Simmons, and it’s expected to premiere on Peacock this September.

The Continental will be the first offshoot project inspired by the John Wick films, but it won’t be the last. The spinoff film Ballerina starring Ana de Armas will hit the theatres next year, and several more films are in the early stages of development but they’re yet to be confirmed.

Mel Gibson will be starring in the John Wick prequel series The Continental at Starz.

The series was ordered back in 2018 and it follows the inner workings of the titular hotel which is a refuge for assassins, from the film franchise. The Continental will look at the origin behind the hotel-for-assassins through Winston Scott, who is in a 1975 New York City and faces his past he thought he left behind. He goes through a deadly course through New York’s underworld in an attempt to seize the hotel, which is the meeting point for the world’s most dangerous criminals.

Gibson is set to play Cormac, but no details have been released about his character. Previously it was announced that The Continental will be a three-night event series and no premiere date is set.

The series comes from Greg Coolidge and Kirk Ward, who also serve as showrunners. Chad Stahelski, Derek Kolstad, David Leitch, Shawn Simmons, Paul Wernick, Rhett Reese, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee serve as executive producers.

This is Gibson’s first regular TV role. He was in the Australian series The Sullivans in the 1970s and made appearances in other shows. Gibson is mostly known for his film roles which include the Lethal Weapon and Mad Max franchises, Braveheart, The Patriot, and Signs.

The three John Wick films made over $300 million at the global box office, according to Variety. A fourth film is filming and is set to be released on May 27, 2022.
