It was created for ABC by David Shore, who drew inspiration from the South Korean series of the same name.

Highmore addressed the show’s cancelation in an official statement and thanked to everyone who tuned in to watch it for their support over the years.

“Playing Dr. Shaun Murphy has been an immense privilege and one of the most remarkable and rewarding experiences of my life. I will always be grateful to David, Liz, and Erin as well as the hugely talented – and lovely – cast, writers, and crew who made this show possible,” said Highmore.

Season 7 will also star Richard Schiff, Chuku Modu, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Bria Samoné Henderson, and Noah Galvin, and it’s set to premiere on February 20.

The acclaimed Emmy-winning sitcom Abbott Elementary will return on February 7, with a one-hour premiere. The third season of the beloved comedy was initially supposed to kick off production back in May, but those plans were pushed in the face of the labor disputes in Hollywood.

Grey’s Anatomy and its spinoff series Station 19 are both set for the March 14 midseason premiere. Station 19 experienced a major scheduling shift, and it’s moving from 8 PM to 10 PM to make room for the fellow first responder drama 9-1-1. Only one crossover between Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 is planned for the upcoming season.

The list of returning ABC shows this midseason will also include the reality series The Bachelor, set for a two-hour premiere on January 22. It will be followed by a true crime series 20/20 (January 22), The Conners, Not Dead Yet, Judge Steve Harvey (February 7), and the two-hour premiere of American Idol on February 18. Will Trent, The Rookie, and The Good Doctor are all set to return on February 20.

The show’s streaming numbers are just as impressive, with the same-day average of 3.3 million viewers jumping to 9.1 million after five weeks of multiplatform viewing.

Thomas had her last appearance as series regular in the finale of season four, which aired on Monday night. The episode, titled “Vamos,” sees Dr. Browne taking a job at one Guatemalan clinic while the rest of her colleagues return to the United States. 

In an interview with Deadline, Thomas, who was under contract for two more seasons, called the decision to exit The Good Doctor “a really, really difficult” one.

“I am just now ready to try something new, ultimately,” said Thomas, before leaving the door open for a guest appearance in the future.

“I absolutely would love to come back every now and then and say hi, bring Claire’s skills from Guatemala and her stories. I’m very much looking forward to that,” she added.

Thomas later broke the news on her social media with a series of farewell posts.

Following Thomas’s exit, The Good Doctor will promote Noah Galvin (Dr. Asher Wolke) and Bria Samone Henderson (Dr. Jordan Allen) to series regulars in season five. Osvaldo Benavides, who was introduced as Dr. Mateo Rendon Osma in the season four finale, will also join the main cast. The new episodes are expected to premiere in the fall.

The series which follows autistic surgeon Shaun Murphy (Highmore), who overcomes personal and professional hurdles while working at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital will continue to Season Three. 

Currently airing its second season, The Good Doctor’s ratings are down from its freshman run. According to TVLine the series’ sophomore run is averaging 6.8 million total viewers and just over a 1.1 demo rating, down 30 and 40 percent respectively. 

The series also stars Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Richard Schiff, Hill Harper, Tamlyn Tomita, Christina Chang, Fiona Gubelmann, Will Yun Lee, and Paige Spara. This season will also see executive producer Daniel Dae Kim step in front of the camera. Starring in a four-four-episode arc as the hospital’s new chief of surgery Dr. Jackson Han. 

ABC has also picked up Shark Tank and A Million Little Things for additional seasons.
