The Craig Zobel-directed thriller starring Betty Gilpin, Ike Barinholtz, Hilary Swank, Emma Roberts, Ethan Suplee, and Justin Hartley has been pulled from Universal’s roster. 

News of the cancelation was announced by the studio Saturday and follows Universal’s earlier decision to pause advertising it.

“While Universal Pictures had already paused the marketing campaign for The Hunt, after thoughtful consideration, the studio has decided to cancel our plans to release the film, ” a spokesperson for Universal said in a statement. “We stand by our filmmakers and will continue to distribute films in partnership with bold and visionary creators, like those associated with this satirical social thriller, but we understand that now is not the right time to release this film.”

Per the official logline, the film follows “Twelve strangers wake up in a clearing. They don’t know where they are, or how they got there. They don’t know they’ve been chosen for a very specific purpose – The Hunt.”

The Hunt was scheduled to hit theaters September 27.

Ike Barinholtz joins the previously announced Emma Roberts, Justin Hartley and Glenn Howerton in the highly charged political thriller. 

Barinholtz is best known for his role on The Mindy Project. His big screen credits include his directorial debut last year, The Oath, in which he also stared opposite Tiffany Haddish.

The Hunt was written by Lost and The Leftovers scribes Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse. Directing is Craig Zobel who will also executive produce alongside Cuse. Blumhouse’s Jason Blum will produce, alongside Lindelof via his White Rabbit banner.

Plot and character details are kept under wraps, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the “subversive script that takes its cues from the current political climate in America, elevating the current conflict between right and left wings to a violent level.”

The production is set to begin this month. The Hunt has been set for an October 18 premiere.

The politically charged feature will be directed by Craig Zobel. According to Deadline, while no details have been revealed regarding the plot, sources say it “explores escalating aggressiveness between the political right and left in America.”

Roberts, Hartley and Howerton are the first to be cast in the production. Roberts is best known for her roles in American Horror Story. Hartley stars as Kevin Pearson on NBC’s hit family drama, This Is Us, and toplines NBC’s A.P. Bio and also stars in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

The Hunt is expected to hit theaters October 18.

The casting continued for Amazon’s 1970s-set drama. According to multiple outlets, the How I Men Your Mother alum has been cast to star opposite leads Al Pacino, Logan Lerman and Jerrika Hinton. 

The Nazi-hunting series hails from David Weil, who penned the screenplay. Loosely inspired by real-life events, The Hunt follows a band of Nazi hunters who have discovered that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials are living among them and are conspiring to create a Fourth Reich in the US. 

Amazon put out an order for a 10-episode first season in May of last year. The series is executive produced by Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele, who has an overall TV deal at Amazon. Weil will also serve as co-showrunner with Nikki Toscano. Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (American Horror Story) will direct the first episode.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Radnor will play Lonny Flash, a movie star who is secretly a member of the group led by Pacino’s character. 

Also starring are Lena Olin, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Tiffany Boone, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Greg Austin and Dylan Baker.

The Hunt follows a band of Nazi hunters in New York City circa 1977. They discover that hundreds of high-ranking Nazi officials have made a home in the United States and plan to create a Fourth Reich there, then set out on to hunt and stop them.

If he inks the deal this will be the Oscar-winner’s television debut. The Nazi hunting series hails from Oscar-winning Get Out writer-director Jordan Peele. Should he join, he will star opposite the previously cast Logan Lerman. Pacino will play a veteran Nazi hunter who mentors Lerman’s character.

The Hunt was created by David Weil, who will also write and executive produce.
