It’s a good year to be on Netflix — or Scarlett Johansson.

The 92nd Academy Award nominations were announced by Issa Rae and John Cho early on Tuesday morning, meaning many stars woke up to good news.

They included Martin Scorsese, whose Netflix feature, The Irishman, picked up 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, and acting nods for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. Renée Zellweger also received a Best Lead Actress for her role as Judy Garland for which she won the Golden Globe and will go up against Charlize Theron for her turn as Megyn Kelly in Bombshell.

Perhaps the happiest, however, is Scarlett Johansson. The 35-year-old was nominated for both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress for Netflix’s Marriage Story and Jojo Rabbit, respectively.

Todd Phillips’ Joker picked up the most nominations with 11, including Best Director and Best Lead Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. It will have tough competition from Sam Mendes’ World War I flick, 1917, which is the favorite for Best Picture.

The year is coming to an end and for many people and media sites, it’s a time to look back and create lists of the best film and television releases throughout the year. This also seems to be true for former presidents. Former President, Barack Obama, has released his annual list of his favorite movies of the last year and it contains some noteworthy names.

“Next up are my favorite movies and TV shows of 2019,” Obama wrote on his Twitter account. “Of course, there’s also American Factory, a film from our own production company, Higher Ground, that was recently shortlisted for an Oscar.”

So which movies made Obama’s cut? Apart for American Factory, the list contains Amazing Grace, Apollo 11, Ash is Purest White, Atlantics, Birds of Passage, Booksmart, Diane, The Farewell, Ford v Ferrari, The Irishman, Just Mercy, The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Little Women, Marriage Story, Parasite, The Souvenir, and Transit.

Obama also liked especially The Watchmen, Unbelievable and the second season of Fleabag.

Even a seven-word role can be super exciting for some.

Martin Scorsese’s three-and-a-half-hour mob epic might be full of dialogue, but actress Anna Paquin who starred as Peggy Sheeran, the adult daughter of mafia hitman Frank Sheeran portrayed by Robert De Niro had just seven words to say.

Seven words for an Oscar-winning actress? That’s right. But despite the internet’s uproar, Paquin herself was very content with the role.

“It’s very endearing when people think they are fighting a fight on your behalf, but not really necessary. I’m incredibly happy. I have such a tiny little role in the film, and I was so excited to get to be a part of it in the first place, and all of this [awards recognition] is just the icing on the cake.”

After Paquin got the role, she knew, despite those seven words, it was an immediate yes from her.

“I just can’t picture any actor on the planet going, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to work with Martin Scorsese and every single living legend in our field.’”

This story was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

The three-and-a-half hour-long mob drama starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci has been watched by more than 26 million global accounts.

In an unprecedented move, the streaming giant has released viewership data for Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. According to Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, 26,404,081 watched at least 70% of the mobster film in its first seven days on the platform.

Sarandos added that Netflix expects about 40 million account holders to watch the film over its first 28 days.

The Irishman garnered a Golden Globe best drama nomination earlier this week in what can only be described as massive Golden Globe haul for Netflix with 34 nominations across TV and film.

“It’s a good mark of quality — both for the industry and for consumers, meaning you want to be at that place where all the good stuff is happening,” Sarandos added. “Creators mostly want to be in the culture… and Netflix can do that like nobody else.”

In case you were wondering, despite being three and a half hours-long, Martin Scorsese has never thought about releasing his latest film The Irishman as a limited series.

After its theatrical release, Scorsese’s mob epic has finally hit Netflix worldwide and the acclaimed director talks about the conversation saying that the story could have played out over a couple of episodes.

“You could say, ‘This is a long story, you can play it out over two seasons’ — I saw somebody mention that,” the director said. “Absolutely no. I’ve never even thought of it. Because the point of this picture is the accumulation of detail. It’s an accumulated cumulative effect by the end of the movie — which means you get to see from beginning to end [in one sitting] if you’re so inclined. A series is great, it’s wonderful, you can develop character and plot lines and worlds are recreated. But this wasn’t right for that.”

So just in case you were wondering — the acclaimed director is very sure that The Irishman would not have worked better as a limited series.

The streaming giant unveils the final trailer for The Irishman.

Martin Scorsese’s mob epic, which is currently in theaters, debuts on Netflix November 27.

The second trailer is a lot more revealing, including some pivotal scenes that even show several mob murders.

The Irishman features a stellar cast with Robert De Niro as mobster Frank Sheeran, Al Pacino as Jimmy Hoffa, and Joe Pesci as criminal overlord Russell Bufalino. The film used state-of-the-art CGI aging technology to de-age its trio of stars.

Ray Romano, Harvey Keitel, Anna Paquin, Jesse Plemons, Stephen Graham, and Bobby Cannavale also star in the film.
