The Simpsons is the longest-running American animated show of all time, and it’s not going away anytime soon. The beloved show is on its path to cross the 800-episode mark after being renewed through the 2024-25 broadcast cycle.

The Simpsons will extend its run as the longest-running primetime scripted series in television history after being renewed for seasons 35 and 36. Matt Groening’s iconic series originally premiered in 1989 and left a permanent mark on popular culture, winning 35 Primetime Emmy Awards along the way.

The Simpsons isn’t Fox’s only animated classic to receive a renewal through 2024-2025. Family Guy will return for its 22nd and 23rd seasons, while Bob’s Burgers was renewed for seasons 14 and 15. Their two-season renewals don’t come as a shocker because they’re valuable streaming assets for Disney following the studio’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Michael Thorn, president of scripted programming for Fox Entertainment, announced their renewal in an official statement and said it’s their way of celebrating excellence in animation on Fox.

“Three-plus decades of The Simpsons, more than two decades of Family Guy, and over a decade of Bob’s Burgers proves the enduring power of the animation genre on our network and the infinite fan affinity for these outrageously funny comedy classics,” said Thorn.

The Simpsons is the longest-running scripted TV series in history and it is not about to slow down. The 31st season of the animated juggernaut will premiere on Disney+ next month.

The season contains 22 episodes and it will drop in one go on the streaming platform on November 6th. It will join more than 600 episodes already available on Disney+.

As in previous seasons, the 31st season contains various celebrity guest appearances. Among others, we’ll get to hear Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, Billy Porter, Jason Momoa, John Mulaney, Joey King, Kevin Smith, Jim Parsons, Cate Blanchett, Chrissy Teigen, and Lilly Singh. John Legend and Weezer will give musical performances.

The season will also see the 30th Treehouse of Horror episode—a beloved series tradition since it’s second season. This time, the episode will also return to CGI animation as it did back in Treehouse of Horror VI in 1996. Back then Homer was transformed to 3D as an accident took him to “the real world”. Over the years the show used these episodes to experiment with different kinds of styles such as LEGO, puppetry, and even a live version.

Countless celebrities have made an appearance on The Simpsons over the last decades and now there is a new addition to the list: director Kevin Smith. Smith went on Instagram and posted a picture of himself recording the lines his character will say in the upcoming episode.

In his post, Smith did not bother to hide his excitement brought by this new gig. “D’OH! I reached a career milestone yesterday when I voiced myself on The Simpsons!” Smith wrote. “This was a massive moment in my life, right up there with the Chinese Theater footprints or Clerks getting into the Library of Congress!”

The Simpsons are in my creative DNA and I’ve spent my career trying to ape their blend of humor and heart,” he continued. “So when I received the invitation to voice a Simpsonized version of me, I wept tears of joy. Carolyn Omine is the Emmy winning writer of the ep, as well as my way into my favorite show of all time. When Homer called Maggie Silent Bob in ‘3 Gays and a Condo’ I thought that was the closest I’d ever come to Springfield.”

D’OH! I reached a career milestone yesterday when I voiced myself on @thesimpsons! I was a big fan of the @matt.groening comic strip #lifeinhell, which ran weekly in the @villagevoice. The day they premiered the #traceyullman Show on @foxtv, I was there to see the cartoon shorts by the same guy. “I like the punching bag sound,” said Marge, and I knew I was seeing something historic. Shy of the Bart-choking, it reminded me of *my* family, and all the other families in my hometown. So when they gave #thesimpsons their own Christmas special, I was there for the initial airing (when Santa’s Little Helper joined the family), watching with @tellemants. We loved this show, and you gotta remember, I was in my late teens when this show began – so I was rebelling against everything. But The Simpsons was *already* anti-establishment – so we built our lives around Sundays and watched every episode, laughing, learning and loving. The Simpsons are in my creative DNA and I’ve spent my career trying to ape their blend of humor and heart. So when I received the invitation to voice a Simpsonized version of me, I wept tears of joy. @carolynohmine is the Emmy winning writer of the ep, as well as my way into my favorite show of all time. When Homer called Maggie Silent Bob in “3 Gays and a Condo” I thought that was the closest I’d ever come to Springfield. But thanks to Carolyn, now I get to speak to #homersimpson himself! Eternal thanks to Carolyn, everyone writing on the show, the recording engineers, and all the way more famous people who probably passed on this part, allowing Carolyn to go way down the list to find my name! I told the kids in the writers room I didn’t care if I was first, second or third choice: I was just ecstatic to be there. The head writer joked “You were our *final* choice.” So finally, after being a fan for 35 seasons, I’m gonna be part of the Simpsons’ world! It’s the end of an era in Springfield.

Since the inception of The Simpsons in 1989, Hank Azaria has provided the voice of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, the owner of the Kwik-E-Mart convenience store.

The Indian character has often been a source of controversy and come under criticism for perpetuating stereotypes about the South Asian community. Azaria, who is white, stated in 2018 that he had been enlightened and was even willing to step down as the character’s voice.

That time has now come.

After 30 years in the role, the Brockmire actor has confirmed that Apu will no longer be in his repertoire.

“I won’t be doing the voice anymore, that’s all we know. Unless there’s some way to transition it or something,” he said at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. “What they’re going to do with the character is their call, it’s up to them, they haven’t sorted that out yet. All we agreed on is that I won’t do the voice anymore. We all had made the decision together, we all feel it was the right thing and good about it.”

Azaria will continue to provide the voice for Moe Szyslak, Carl, Lou, and several other characters.

Fox’s acclaimed animated comedy has tapped Cate Blanchett and David Harbour for guest roles.

The two-time Oscar winner and Stranger Things star are set to lend their voices to future episodes of The Simpsons.

According to Entertainment Weekly, it’s fair to assume that Blanchett will make an appearance in the season 31 finale voicing a canine psychologist named Elaine who agrees to help Santa’s Little Helper, who is suffering from depression.

“She determines if there’s a trauma in his past that they have to go solve, which actually goes back to the first episode of the series,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told the outlet, adding that fans will experience “a callback that is older than the internet.”

Harbour, on the other hand, will pop up in a season 32 episode as an alternate version of Mr. Burns.

“Like Mission: Impossible, they give him a whole new body and face and voice so that these people in the plant won’t possibly recognize him,” shares Jean. “He’s supposed to be a blue-collar guy from another part of the plant, but everything he says is like Mr. Burns. He wants to go to karaoke and sing songs from the 1890s, but the guys don’t see through it.”

According to the show’s OG composer Danny Elfman, The Simpsons is on its “last year.”

The long-running cartoon has 669 episodes to date. Since it first aired in 1989, it has been one of the most well-loved shows on television. Now, after 31 seasons, it sounds like the show could be finally coming to an end.

Speaking with Joe, Elfman said: “Well, from what I’ve heard, it is coming to an end. I don’t know for a fact, but I’ve heard that it will be in its last year.”

He continued: “All I can say is that I’m so flabbergasted and amazed that it has lasted as long as it did. You have to realise, when I scored The Simpsons, I wrote this crazy piece of music, and I expected no one would hear it, because I really did not think the show had a chance in hell.”

The Simpsons still draws in 4.8 million viewers each year. Although this still sounds like a lot, viewing has halved since season 19 and near quartered since season 12. In fact, the show has been showing a sure decline over the last two decades.

Even so, can we really imagine America’s long-loved iconic cartoon coming to an end? More updates to be shared when they are announced.

30 years have passed since The Simpsons entered our lives and it doesn’t seem the yellow family is showing signs of slowing down. Now the long-running animated show adds another prize to its list by winning the Outstanding Animated Program award at the Creative Arts Emmys for the episode Mad About the Toy.

This is the 11th time the show wins this award. Thus it has widened the gap between itself from Southpark, which has won this award 5 times over the years.

The other contestants in the category were Bojack Horseman with the episode “Free Churro,” Big Mouth, Bob’s Burgers and Come Along With Me. Bojack Horseman, in particular, was considered a likely win with the episode in which Bojack delivers a bizarre eulogy throughout it. This would have been a first win for the Netflix show in that category.

The writer of the winning episode, Michael Price, joked that the show used to be outrageous but has now been around so long it’s no longer shocking.  “I think we’re just happy to be where we are,” he said.

Disney’s acquisition of Fox’s movie and TV assets gave them, among a lot of other content, the reigns of the longest-running scripted show in American television history – The Simpsons. What the fans of the yellow family can be sure of is that when Disney launches its streaming service, Disney+, all 30 seasons of the animated show will be available immediately. But what more does the deal holds for The Simpsons?

In D23 Expo this weekend it was confirmed that the creators are negotiating with Disney the possibility of a long-awaited sequel to The Simpsons Movie. Twelve years after the movie was released, It is not the first time this possibility arises and the show’s creator, Matt Groening has already said recently that such a sequel will happen “someday” but now executive producer Al Jean has confirmed that talks are underway.

Also confirmed in the expo were talks about a possible spinoff for the popular show. No details were provided but it seems that the creators have a big source-material to work with, given the enormity of the show’s cast after 30 years of running.
