Olyphant is joining this project in the role of Kirsh, a synth who’s mentoring Sydney Chandler’s Wendy, a hybrid with the consciousness of a child in the body of an adult. David Rysdahl was cast around the same time, after working with Hawley on the fifth season of Fargo.

Hawley’s upcoming series will take us around 30 years before the events of the original 1979 film starring Sigourney Weaver, and it’s the first story in this franchise to take place on Earth. The production was shot down back in July due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and Hawley is planning to go back to work in January.

“I got some footage. Some of the first hour was shot before we had to shutdown. It’s stuff to play with and edit. I’m excited to get back in there,” he told Deadline.

In addition to Chandler, Olyphant, and Rysdahl, this series will also star Alex Lawther, Samuel Blenkin, Essie Davis, Kit Young, and Adarsh Gourav. It’s expected to premiere on FX in the first half of 2025.

Olyphant recalled the time when he auditioned for J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek revival in a recent episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He was initially auditioning for Dr. Leonard McCoy before reading for Kirk, but the studio eventually wanted to go with a younger actor for this role.

Despite not being cast as Kirk, Olyphant said he had a great experience with J.J. Abrams and described him as “a lovely guy”. He also had nothing but words of praise for Chris Pine, and said he’s a huge fan of the Dungeons & Dragons actor, both on and off screen.

“I have since then met Chris Pine and I am a huge fan of him both on and off screen… I had the honor, we’re going to say honor, to go to the Golden Globes one year…and I spent most of the evening at the bar with Chris Pine. Just really adored him. What a good guy,” said Olyphant.

The Santa Clarita Diet actor joins previously announced Temuera Morrison, Rosario Dawson, and Michael Biehn and it’s still unknown what his role will be.

Olyphant is also known for his roles on Justified and Deadwood, the former of which he received an Emmy nomination. His film roles include Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Dreamcatcher, The Girl Next Door, Live Free or Die Hard, and Hitman.

Season 2 of The Mandalorian is set to be released later this year and Season 3 is already in the works at Disney+.

The series is about the Mandalorian, played by Pedro Pascal, a bounty hunter on the fringes of the Star Wars universe, and how he becomes the guardian of a mysterious creature known as The Child, or by fans as Baby Yoda.

There are three other Star Wars shows in the works at Disney+, which include the Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor, the Cassian Andor series starring Diego Luna, and the recently announced all female-led Star Wars series from Leslye Headland.

The dark comedy followed realtor spouses Sheila (Drew Barrymore) and Joel (Timothy Olyphant) who led discontented lives in the LA suburb of Santa Clarita, except for the fact that Sheila tuned into a zombie.

“The world had never known a ‘zom-com’ until Santa Clarita Diet, and we’re indebted to creator Victor Fresco for bringing this idea to Netflix,” Netflix said in a statement. “To their endless credit, the incredible Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant were totally game, with an uncanny knack for comedy that brought Sheila and Joel Hammond to vibrant life, even though one of them was undead. We’re grateful to Victor, Drew, and Timothy, along with fellow executive producers Tracy Katsky, Aaron Kaplan, Chris Miller, and Ember Truesdell and the terrific cast, including Liv Hewson and Skyler Gisondo, and crew for three hilarious seasons for Netflix members to discover for years to come.”

Not bad. Everything ends. This was a thing. And so it ended. We’ll miss it but are proud of the work we did and will always appreciate the love and enthusiasm we felt from our audience. It if was up to them, Sheila and Joel would continue for another 10,000 years.”
