]]>Described as “a wicked satire about the commodification of marginalized voices”, American Fiction centers on a respected author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, whose life turns upside down after he pens a pseudonymous satirical novel out of protest, only to watch it become a surprise bestseller.
Jeffrey Wright plays the lead role, while the supporting cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Sterling K. Brown, Myra Lucretia Taylor, John Ortiz, Issa Rae, and Adam Brody.
American Fiction is based on Percival Everett’s novel Erasure, and Cord Jefferson was happy to see the audience in Toronto welcome it with open arms.
“My gratitude towards everyone who watched American Fiction [and] discussed it afterwards among friends and colleagues is endless. The film is now in your hands, and I’m so grateful that it was embraced in this way,” Jefferson said in a statement.
Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers was the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Award, followed by the second runner-up – Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron, which served as the festival’s opening film.

]]>Origin stars Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as the Pulitzer Prize-winning author Isabel Wilkerson. It’s been described as a deeply moving portrait of grief and healing, which sees Wilkerson investigate the genesis of injustice and uncover a hidden truth that affects us all.
In addition to Ellis-Taylor, Origin also stars Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Vera Farmiga, Audra McDonald, Nick Offerman, Blair Underwood, and Connie Nielsen.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey announced that DuVernay’s new film will be a part of the festival’s lineup this year and said he can’t wait for Toronto audiences to feel its power.
“Ava DuVernay’s Origin is a brilliantly crafted showcase of her talent as a writer, producer, and director. This is audacious filmmaking on a grand, global scale. DuVernay deftly weaves Isabel Wilkerson’s big idea about how we live into a beautiful narrative of passion and discovery,” said Bailey in a statement.
Origin will have its world premiere in Venice on September 6, before heading to Toronto on September 11.

]]>Anita Lee, TIFF’s Chief Programming Officer, was in charge of announcing the Primetime program, and said it will be “bigger than ever and [give] audiences the exclusive and unmatched opportunity to celebrate the best new international series together, in cinema, on the big screen.”
The highly-anticipated adaptation of Anthony Doerr’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel All the Light We Cannot See will see the light of day in Toronto before heading to Netflix in November. Lulu Wang’s highly-anticipated follow-up to The Farewell, the Amazon series Expats starring Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, and Ji-young Yo, will also have its world premiere at TIFF.
The list of films included in the Primetime program also features the romantic drama Alice & Jack starring Andrea Riseborough and Domhnall Gleeson, the Israeli crime drama Bad Boy, and the Canadian comedy Bria Mack Gets a Life.
The 2023 Toronto International Film Festival will take place between September 7 and 17, with Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron serving as the festival’s opening film.

]]>Next Goal Wins draws inspiration from the documentary of the same name and it follows the journey of Dutch-American coach Thomas Rongen to transform American Samoa soccer team from the ground-up following their infamous 31-0 loss to Australia in a 2001 World Cup qualifying match.
Michael Fassbender leads the film’s star-studded ensamble, which also includes Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, Waititi, Will Arnett, and Rhys Darby.
Cameron Bailey, CEO of the Toronto International Film Festival, confirmed the film’s selection and described it as the perfect choice for this festival.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Taika back to the festival and share his audacious take on the most popular sport in the world. Next Goal Wins is perfect for TIFF fans of the beautiful game looking for their football fix until the 2024 World Cup arrives,” Bailey said in a statement.
The Toronto International Film Festival will take place between September 7-17, and the full schedule will be revealed on August 15.

]]>TIFF’s People’s Choice Award is voted online by audience members. The Fabelmans managed to defeat Sarah Polley’s Women Talking and Rian Johnson’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery to take this prestigious accolade home.
Spielberg thanked festival director Cameron Bailey, TIFF staff, and Universal Pictures for making this possible, and gave a special shout-out to the movie fans in Toronto, who made his visit to the festival unforgettable.
“I’m glad I brought this film to Toronto! This is the most personal film I’ve ever made, and the warm reception from everyone in Toronto made my first visit to TIFF so intimate and personal for me and my entire Fabelman family,” said Spielberg in a statement.
TIFF’s People’s Choice Award has long been considered the starting gun in the Oscars race because many of the past recipients went on to win or be nominated for the best picture. In the past ten years alone, 12 Years a Slave, Green Book, and Nomadland won the best picture, while the rest of the winners received nominations for this award.

]]>The coming-of-age drama about a young boy growing up in Belfast during the 60s was met with critical acclaim at TIFF and managed to beat tough competition to win the People’s Choice Award. Scarborough and The Power of the Dog were also in the running for this award and they were crowned as first and second runner-up.
What makes TIFF’s People’s Choice Award so significant is the fact it often foreshadowed Academy Award winners for Best Picture. Last year’s winner Nomadland also picked up this award, and so did Green Book and 12 Years a Slave.
When it comes to the rest of the major winners at TIFF, acting awards went to Jessica Chastain (The Eyes of Tammy Faye) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog). Denis Villeneuve walked away with the director award for his work on the sci-fi epic Dune.

“We felt it was important to open this year’s festival with a film that connects to our shared humanity and that reminds us how deeply we need one another, need to be seen by one another, especially in times of loneliness and despair,” said Vicente in a statement.
Dear Evan Hansen centers on a shy teen, who uses the personal tragedy of a fellow classmate to advance his social status. It stars Ben Platt, Kaitlyn Dever, Amandla Stenberg, Julianne Moore, and Amy Adams, and it’s set to open Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th, before heading to theaters in the U.S. on September 24th.

]]>Snipes recently made an appearance at the Toronto Film Festival, where his new movie Dolemite Is My Name had its world premiere. This wasn’t the only project he discussed with the reporters since a question about his return to the Blade franchise naturally came up.
While chatting with ET Canada at TIFF, Wesley Snipes said he’s open to the prospect of working with Marvel in some capacity in the future.
“Maybe I’ll come back as some other type of character. Who knows? You never know! I mean, you know, I’ve been up and down with the Marvel clan from day one so you never know. I can do a lot of different things,” said the actor.
Snipes’ Marvel casting will have to wait since he’s pretty busy with other projects – including the highly-anticipated sequel Coming 2 America.

According to TIFF co-head and artistic director Cameron Bailey, the team behind this festival worked tirelessly to bring some of the year’s biggest films to Toronto this September.
“We’re thrilled to unveil galas and special presentations that bring the brightest lights in the film to our festival audience. Our new programming team has been hard at work for months to deliver the compelling stories, acclaimed filmmakers, and top onscreen talent that mark our two highest-profile sections,” said Bailey in a statement.
This year’s TIFF will kick off on September 5, with Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band serving as the opening film. It will close on September 15, with Marjane Satrapi’s latest English-language feature Radioactive.

]]>The List of the projects coming to TIFF also includes some of the year’s most promising Oscar hopefuls. Mr. Rogers biopic A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood starring Tom Hanks and John Crowley’s The Goldfinch are also a part of the lineup.
According to TIFF co-head and artistic director Cameron Bailey, the team behind this festival worked tirelessly to bring some of the year’s biggest films to Toronto this September.
“We’re thrilled to unveil galas and special presentations that bring the brightest lights in the film to our festival audience. Our new programming team has been hard at work for months to deliver the compelling stories, acclaimed filmmakers, and top onscreen talent that mark our two highest-profile sections,” said Bailey in a statement.
This year’s TIFF will kick off on September 5, with Once Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and The Band serving as the opening film. It will close on September 15, with Marjane Satrapi’s latest English-language feature Radioactive.
