]]>Poor Things centers on an innocent young woman Bella (Stone), who’s eager to learn about the world around her after being brought back to life by the eccentric scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). The film puts a feminist twist on Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and its star-studded cast also includes Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, Jerrod Carmichael, Margaret Qualley, and Kathryn Hunter.
Poor Things had to beat pretty tough competition in Venice to take the Golden Lion home, including Michael Mann’s Ferrari, David Fincher’s The Killer, and Sofia Copolla’s Priscilla. Lanthimos dedicated the award to Stone, and described her as the film’s driving force “in front and behind the camera.”
The list of major winners in Venice also included Silver Lion winner Evil Does Not Exist and Special Jury Prize winner Green Border. Memory’s Peter Sarsgaard and Priscilla’s breakout star Cailee Spaeny collected acting awards, while Matteo Garrone won Silver Lion for the best director for his work on Io Capitano.

]]>About a month ahead of the festival’s opening night, Venice bosses finally shared the full lineup with the world. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Michael Mann’s Ferrari, and Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla are only some of the high-profile projects set to premiere as a part of the “in competition” program, while Wes Anderson’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Richard Linklater’s Hit Man will premiere out of competition.
Edoardo De Angelis’s Comandante will serve as the festival’s opening film after Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers withdraw from the festival as a result of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Several A-list stars are expected to miss the festival for this reason, but the artistic director Alberto Barbera is still certain that the red carpet will be pretty full.
“Luckily enough the consequences of this strike – which has very good motivations we can agree to – the impact is quite modest on our festival. A few stars will not be with us… We will have actors and actresses who have worked in productions that are fully independent,” said Barbera while talking to the press.
The 80th Venice International Film Festival will return to Italy between August 30 and September 9, with Damien Chazelle serving as the jury president.

]]>White Noise is based on Don DeLillo’s book of the same name, and it centers on a contemporary American family as they deal with the mundane conflicts of everyday life. In addition to Driver and Gerwig, the film also stars Don Cheadle, Raffey Cassidy, Sam Nivola, May Nivola, and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Baumbach’s previous directorial effort Marriage Story also had its world premiere in Venice, and the acclaimed director said it’s an honor to open the festival with White Noise.
“It is a truly wonderful thing to return to the Venice Film Festival, and an incredible honor to have White Noise play as the opening night film. This is a place that loves cinema so much, and it’s a thrill and a privilege to join the amazing films and filmmakers that have premiered here,” said Baumbach.
Festival chief Alberto Barbera echoed his statement and described White Noise as an “original, ambitious and compelling piece of art”, that “examines our obsessions, doubts, and fear”.
The 79th Venice International Film Festival is set to take place between August 31 and September 10 with Julianne Moore serving as a jury president.

]]>The premiere of Dune was a star-studded affair, mostly because it stars some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers, including Timothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Dave Bautista, who walked the red carpet alongside Villeneuve.
After the end credits rolled, the highly-anticipated film was met with a standing ovation, that roared through Venice’s Sala Grande cinema for eight minutes straight. The jury member Chloé Zhao even rushed through the aisles to congratulate Villeneuve and called the movie fantastic.
Dune is also slated to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before heading to theaters on October 22nd. Its sequel is yet to get the green light, but Villeneuve already discussed it with Warner Bros. and Legendary.
“They feel that it would need a really bad outcome at the box office to not have a Dune: Part Two because they love the movie. They are proud of the movie, so they want the movie to move forward. And they still did half of it. So, you know, I’m very optimistic,” he told Total Film.

The list of movies competing for a Golden Lion will be even more crowded, and it includes new projects from the world’s leading art-house directors. Spencer by Pablo Larrain, The Power of the Dog by Jane Campion, Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodovar, and The Hand of God by Paolo Sorrentino are only some of the movies in the competition for the festival’s biggest prize.
The 78th Venice International Film Festival will take place from September 1-11. South Korean director Bong Joon-ho has been appointed as the president of the jury, and he’ll be joined by the director Chloé Zhao and actresses Cynthia Erivo and Sarah Gadon, among others.
