21 films and counting…

Pedro Almodóvar’s 45 years in the movie industry have elicited classic films that have earned him the title of Spain’s most famous director.

His most recent film, Pain and Glory, garnered praise from both audiences and critics at the Cannes Film Festival, with lead actor Antonio Banderas claiming the award for best actor.

Now, the Todo Sobre Mi Madre director will be heading to another festival — the Venice Film Festival.

There, he will be awarded the Golden Lion in recognition of his lifetime achievement.

“I am very excited and honored by the gift of this Golden Lion,” the 69-year-old said in a statement. “This Lion is going to become my pet, along with the two cats I live with. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for giving me this award.”

“Almodóvar isn’t only the greatest and most influential Spanish director since Buñuel, he is a filmmaker who has offered us the most multifaceted, controversial, and provocative portraits of post-Franco Spain,” declared festival director, Alberto Barbera.

This year’s Venice Film Festival will be held from August 28th to September 7th.
