Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler are set to play teenagers Tony and Maria who are from rival street gangs, but end up falling in love. Also starring in the film are Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Corey Stoll, and Brian d’Arcy James.
Rita Moreno, who won an Oscar for playing Anita in the 1961 film, will be appearing in a supporting role and she can be heard singing in the trailer. She’ll be playing Valentina, who’s a reworking of Tony’s boss Doc from the Broadway and film versions.
The 1961 adaptation of the musical won 10 Oscars including Best Picture, making it one of the most awarded films, just behind Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Titanic, and Ben-Hur, which have 11 wins each.

]]>The prolific director took to social media, sharing a few thoughts upon to end of production on September 28. His message was shared via the official Twitter account of production company Amblin.
“This has been a journey without precedence: a joyful, stunning, moving, endlessly surprising encounter with the story and score of one of the world’s greatest musicals,” Spielberg wrote. “My brilliantly talented, fiercely committed, generous and apparently inexhaustible cast and crew of hundreds have given our film everything they’ve got, and already I can say that the film we’ll be releasing on December 18, 2020, owes everything to them as does its immensely grateful director.”
Set in 1950s New York City, Spielberg added: “The city lent us its beauty and its energy, and we drew deeply upon its grand, multicultural, multifaceted spirit. To the people of New York and Paterson, thanks not only for putting up with our trailers, tents, cranes, and mid-street dance sequences; from the bottom of my heart, thanks for the warm welcomes we encountered everywhere, from pedestrians and policemen and neighborhoods and kids. We couldn’t have made our musical without you.”
West Side Story stars Ansel Elgort (Tony), Rachel Zegler (Maria), Ariana DeBose (Anita), and David Alvarez (Bernardo).
