The WGA Awards are taking place later than usual this spring due to Hollywood strikes last year, but we finally know who’ll be in the running. The Writers Guild unveiled the list of nominees, and the films Barbie and Oppenheimer, plus the series The Bear and Succession managed to make the cut.

The Writers Guild made several pretty unconventional choices this year, starting with nominating Barbie for the best original screenplay, unlike the Academy Awards. Air, The Holdovers, May December, and Past Lives also received a nod, while the major Oscar contender Anatomy of a Fall has been shut out.

The WGA nominations for the best adapted screenplay also significantly differ from the Oscar contenders in the same field. American Fiction and Oppenheimer are the only films to be nominated at both ceremonies, and they’ll be competing against Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., Killers of the Flower Moon, and Nyad at the WGA Awards.

When it comes to the TV nominations, Succession and The Bear are leading the way following their recent Emmy sweeps. Succession is the main contender for the best drama series, in addition to receiving two nods for the episodic drama, while The Bear mirrored its success on the comedy side with three nods, including best comedy series.

The Writers Guild will announce the WGA Awards winners on April 14.

The WGA Awards are one of the last ceremonies to take place ahead of Oscars week, and its list of winners is pretty impressive. Severance led the way with wins in two different categories, while Everything Everywhere All at Once and Women Talking dominated the movie field.

Everything Everywhere cemented its status as the Oscars front-runner after beating The Menu, Nope, The Fabelmans, and Tár to win the best original screenplay. Women Talking pulled an upset in the best adapted screenplay category, where it faced tough competition in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, Top Gun: Maverick, and She Said.

The win for Everything Everywhere increases its chances of winning the Oscar in the same category, but the field is even more competitive at this show since it also includes The Banshees of Inisherin and Triangle of Sadness. Women Talking also isn’t a lock at the Oscars, and the German anti-war epic All Quiet on the Western Front is its strongest competitor.

The TV field at the WGA Awards was pretty strong, but the sci-fi drama Severance managed to come on top. In addition to winning the trophy for the best drama, it was named the best new series, while The Bear picked up the award for the best comedy.

The Writers Guild Awards are one of the last award ceremonies to take place leading up to the Oscars on Sunday. Don’t Look Up and CODA dominated the film categories at this show, while Succession and Hacks took top prizes in the TV fields.

Only a day after winning the award for the best motion picture at the Producers Guild of America Awards, CODA managed to dominate the WGA Awards. Its screenwriter Siân Heder picked up the trophy for the best-adapted screenplay.

The award for the best original screenplay went to Adam McKay for Don’t Look Up. This satirical comedy is in the running for the same award at the upcoming Academy Awards, but it will have to face tough competition in Belfast, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, and The Worst Person in the World.

HBO dominated TV categories—several of the network’s top shows walked away with shiny trophies. Succession was the expected winner for the best drama series, while Hacks netted the best comedy series award. As for mini-series, HBO collected another trophy in the category of long form original for Mare of Easttown, while the award for long-form adapted went to Netflix’s Maid.

The awards season is currently in full steam and the Writers Guild of America is the latest organization to crown its winners. Promising Young Woman received the award for the best original screenplay, while Borat Subsequent Moviefilm came out victorious in the category of the best-adapted screenplay.

Promising Young Woman is currently the front-runner for the same award at the Oscars, where it will be competing against several movies it defeated at WGA Awards. Borat Subsequent Moviefilm also received an Academy Award nod for the best-adapted screenplay, and it will be up against The Father, Nomadland, The White Tiger, and One Night in Miami.

When it comes to TV categories, The Crown once again led the way, and it was named the best drama series. It was also a great night for Apple TV’s rookie sitcom Ted Lasso, which won a total of two awards—best comedy series and best new series.

The list of major winners also included The Dissident (best documentary screenplay), Mrs. America (best long-form series – original), and The Queen’s Gambit (best long-form series – adapted).

The 73rd Writers Guild of America Awards took place on March 21st, and they’re often a great indicator of future winners in writing categories at the Oscars.
