Season 5 of the hit neo-western drama premiered back in November last year, and its second half is just around the corner. After a lot of speculations about the future of this series, Paramount finally confirmed Yellowstone is ending its run, but a follow-up is already on the way, with Matthew McConaughey in early negotiations to play the lead role.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, confirmed that Yellowstone is ending after five seasons, but the future of this franchise is looking bright.

“Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from 1883 to Tulsa King, and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan,” sad McCarthy in a statement.

Yellowstone became huge ratings hit since its premiere in 2019, and it spawned several successful spinoffs, including 1883 and 1923, with a few more on the way. The series is led by Kevin Costner, with Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham in supporting roles.

1923 centers on an older generation of the Dutton family, led by the patriarch of the Dutton ranch Jacob (Ford) and his wife Cara (Mirren). The series shows the family facing many hardships during the 20s, from prohibition, drought, and the early stages of the Great Depression.

Renewal of 1923 also doesn’t come as a shocker since Taylor Sheridan always envisioned it as a two-season series with eight episodes each. He’s currently developing another Yellowstone spinoff 6666, taking place in the present day on the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas, set to premiere later this year.

The new series traces the origins of Yellowstone ranch owners the Duttons by telling the tale of a family patriarch Jacob Dutton and his wife Cara. It’s set during a trying time when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition, and the Great Depression all plagued the mountain west and the Duttons who called it home.

The cast of the prequel series also includes Jerome Flynn, Jennifer Ehle, Timothy Dalton, Sebastian Roché, Darren Mann, Michelle Randolph, and James Badge Dale. 1923 will premiere on Paramount+ on December 18, right after one of the latest Yellowstone episodes from the show’s ongoing Season 5. The series is expected to run for two seasons with eight episodes each.

1923 isn’t the first series in Paramount’s ever-expending Yellowstone universe. They kicked things off with a limited series 1883, starring Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Sam Elliott, which told the Duttons’ origin story and saw them establish the Yellowstone Ranch. Modern-day spin-off 6666 is currently on the way, and it will take us to the Four Sixes Ranch in Texas.

The series takes place in 1883 and follows the Dutton family as they go on a journey west through the Great Plains toward the last bastion of untamed America. It’s a retelling of Western expansion and it tells the story of a family escaping poverty to have a better future in Montana.

Thornton will play the guest role of Marshal Jim Courtright.

The actor is known for his film work and he’s received three Oscar nominations and won one for Sling Blade, which he wrote and starred in. He’s also known for his roles in A Simple Plan, Monster’s Ball, The Man Who Wasn’t There, Bad Santa, Armageddon, and Friday Night Lights.

The series was created and executive produced by Yellowstone co-creator Taylor Sheridan. John Linson, Art Linson, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, and Bob Yari also executive produce. 

1883 is set to premiere on Paramount Plus on December 19.

Multiple outlets confirm that Yellowstone has been renewed for a fourth season. News of the renewal comes ahead of the third season premiere this summer. 

According to Variety, the season has been a breakout hit for Paramount, averaging around 5 million viewers per episode in delayed viewing. 

Co-created by Taylor Sheridan and Josh Linson, Yellowstone stars Kevin Costner along with Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White, Danny Huston, and Gil Birmingham.
