]]>Like all of Nolan’s past projects, this one is shrouded in secrecy and plot details are being kept under wraps. Expectations are running high in the wake of the success of Oppenheimer, but Universal Pictures is staying hush and they’ve only revealed this project will hit the theaters on July 17, 2026.
When Nolan’s new film was first announced, Matt Damon was the only star attached to it, reuniting with the acclaimed director after working together on Oppenheimer. He was followed by the Spider-Man star Tom Holland, while Emmy winner Zendaya and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway hopped on board last week.
Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning star of 12 Years a Slave and the Black Panther franchise, is the latest big name added to the cast. 2024 has been a pretty eventful year for the acclaimed actress, who led A Quiet Place: Day One and voiced the acclaimed animated film The Wild Robot. Her notable credits also include Queen of Katwe, Us, and voice roles in The Jungle Book and the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Anora is the fifth consecutive film to win the Palme d’Or for its distributor Neon, after the success of Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, and Anatomy of a Fall. It’s also the first American film to be honored with this prize in over a decade, since The Tree of Life in 2011.
Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or acceptance speech was an ode to movie theatres, and he said he’s determined to keep making feature films intended for theatrical exhibition after Anora.
“This literally has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years, so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But I do know that I will continue to fight for cinema because right now as filmmakers, we have to fight to keep cinema alive,” said Baker in his speech.

]]>Nemo, who uses they/them pronouns, made it to the grand final after blowing us away with their amazing performance in the second semi-final. They managed to defy all odds and beat Croatia’s front-runner Baby Lasagna with “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” to be crowned as the winner.
Nemo largely owes their victory to the jury vote, where they won on 22 sets of the maximum 12 points for a total of 365 jury points. Baby Lasagna won the public vote but eventually lost to Nemo by 44 points after the Swiss singer topped the tally with a grand total of 591 points.
Nemo made history as the first non-binary person to win the Eurovision Song Contest, in addition to being the first Swiss representative since Celine Dion with “Ne partez pas sans moi” in 1988 to be crowned as the winner.
The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest grand final took place on May 11 at Malmö Arena in Malmö, Sweden, with Petra Mede and Malin Åkerman serving as hosts.

]]>Directed by Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino, Challengers chronicles the rise and fall of the former tennis protégé Tashi (Zendaya). A bright future was ahead of her before an injury derailed her career as a professional tennis player, forcing her to turn to coaching instead.
She poured all her energy into helping her husband Art (Mike Faist) become a Grand Slam champion. Once he finds himself in a rut, Tashi decides to sign him up for a low-level event to gain back his confidence, but it turns out he won’t get an easy win because his former best friend and Tashi’s ex Patrick (Josh O’Connor) is also playing.
R-rated original films usually struggle to make a mark at the box office, but that didn’t stop Challengers from serving up a win with a $15 million opening. In addition to topping the domestic box office, it earned $10 million outside of North America.
Challengers was initially slated for the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year before shifting its release date to April 26, 2024, due to dual strikes in Hollywood.

]]>For All Mankind is set in the alternative universe where the United States failed to become the first nation to land the man on the Moon. This eventually led to them losing the space race and changed the course of history as we know it.
In addition to renewing For All Mankind, also ordered a spin-off Star City, described as “a propulsive paranoid thriller” about the Soviet cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers who won the space race in this alt-history retelling.
Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi co-created Star City with Ronald D. Moore, after their fascination with the Soviet space program grew while they were working on For All Mankind.
“The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race,” said the duo in a statement.

]]>Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures’ president of production, said they’re honored to join forces with Goddard and see him add his vision to the Matrix canon.
“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Ehrman in a statement.
Despite not directing the next Matrix film, the original co-writer and co-director Lana Wachowski will be back as one of its executive producers. She revived the franchise with The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, which marked the first film in this series to be directed solely by her.
Goddard’s new take is still in the early stages of development, so it remains unclear how it connects to the original franchise. We also don’t know if any of the core cast members, including Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, will be back for this sequel.
