Christopher Nolan is busy plotting his next film, and its cast will be as star-studded as it gets. Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o is the latest star to join its A-list ensemble, which includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Anne Hathaway.

Like all of Nolan’s past projects, this one is shrouded in secrecy and plot details are being kept under wraps. Expectations are running high in the wake of the success of Oppenheimer, but Universal Pictures is staying hush and they’ve only revealed this project will hit the theaters on July 17, 2026.

When Nolan’s new film was first announced, Matt Damon was the only star attached to it, reuniting with the acclaimed director after working together on Oppenheimer. He was followed by the Spider-Man star Tom Holland, while Emmy winner Zendaya and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway hopped on board last week.

Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning star of 12 Years a Slave and the Black Panther franchise, is the latest big name added to the cast. 2024 has been a pretty eventful year for the acclaimed actress, who led A Quiet Place: Day One and voiced the acclaimed animated film The Wild Robot. Her notable credits also include Queen of Katwe, Us, and voice roles in The Jungle Book and the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Smith’s sons Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin shared a statement with the British media this past week, announcing she died at the age of 89:

“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September. An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.”

The collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars was a long time coming, and it was worth the wait. The music video for their duet “Die with a Smile” is here, and its retro music video will take you on a walk down memory lane.

Directed by Mars and Daniel Ramos, the music video for this A-list collaboration is a true vintage delight. Gaga and Mars are rocking matching cowboy-themed outfits in vibrant shades of red and blue while performing on a TV studio stage that looks straight out of the 70s.

The duo has been discussing a potential collaboration for quite some time, and “Die with a Smile” finally started taking shape while they were both recording new music in Malibu. Mars invited Gaga to listen to the song he was working on, and she was so impressed that they stayed up all night to put the finishing touches on this track.

Gaga and Mars delivered the first live performance of “Die with a Smile” at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles, where they rocked the retro outfits from the music video. This song was released as a standalone single, and it’s not connected to Gaga’s upcoming seventh studio album or any of Mars’ future projects.

Over two decades after Gladiator first saw the light of day, Ridley Scott is ready to take us back to Ancient Rome. The epic first trailer for Gladiator II is here, and it sees Paul Mescal stepping into the arena and fighting for his life as the gladiator Lucius Verus.

Lucius Verus has really been through it since the first Gladiator movie—the son of Marcus Aurelius and Lucilla was once an heir to the Roman Empire, but those days are long behind him. He’s trying to lead a peaceful life in the coastal town of Numidia before he’s forced into slavery after being taken from his home by the Roman army.

Inspired by the story of Maximus, he resolves to give it his all to survive the arena and fight as the gladiator, challenging the rule of emperors Caracalla and Geta.

In addition to the Oscar nominee Paul Mescal in the lead role, Gladiator II also stars Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Derek Jacobi, May Calamawy, Tim McInnerny, Alexander Karim, and Rory McCann.

Gladiator II was written by David Scarpa, with Ridley Scott returning as the director and producer. It will premiere internationally on November 15, before hitting the theaters in North America a week later, on November 22.

Films about female experience were going stronger than ever at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and won some of the festival’s top prizes. Sean Baker’s Anora was one of them, and it was honored with the prestigious Palme d’Or after premiering a rapturous standing ovation at Cannes.

Anora is the tale of the young exotic dancer from New York (Mikey Madison), whose whirlwind romance with the son of a Russian oligarch leads to a quick elopement. Just when she thinks she could have it all, his parents fly to New York to try and annul their marriage.

Anora is the fifth consecutive film to win the Palme d’Or for its distributor Neon, after the success of Parasite, Titane, Triangle of Sadness, and Anatomy of a Fall. It’s also the first American film to be honored with this prize in over a decade, since The Tree of Life in 2011.

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or acceptance speech was an ode to movie theatres, and he said he’s determined to keep making feature films intended for theatrical exhibition after Anora.

“This literally has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years, so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But I do know that I will continue to fight for cinema because right now as filmmakers, we have to fight to keep cinema alive,” said Baker in his speech.

The Eurovision Song Contest returned to Sweden on the 50th anniversary of ABBA’s victory and gave us another night to remember. The Swiss contestant Nemo emerged as the winner with “The Code”, making history as the first non-binary person to come out victorious along the way.

Nemo, who uses they/them pronouns, made it to the grand final after blowing us away with their amazing performance in the second semi-final. They managed to defy all odds and beat Croatia’s front-runner Baby Lasagna with “Rim Tim Tagi Dim” to be crowned as the winner.

Nemo largely owes their victory to the jury vote, where they won on 22 sets of the maximum 12 points for a total of 365 jury points. Baby Lasagna won the public vote but eventually lost to Nemo by 44 points after the Swiss singer topped the tally with a grand total of 591 points.

Nemo made history as the first non-binary person to win the Eurovision Song Contest, in addition to being the first Swiss representative since Celine Dion with “Ne partez pas sans moi” in 1988 to be crowned as the winner.

The 2024 Eurovision Song Contest grand final took place on May 11 at Malmö Arena in Malmö, Sweden, with Petra Mede and Malin Åkerman serving as hosts.

Challengers is one of the buzziest new films to come out this spring, and it’s getting credit where credit is due. After premiering to rave reviews, Luca Guadagnino’s tennis drama demolished the competition to top the domestic box office with a $15 million opening.

Directed by Call Me By Your Name’s Luca Guadagnino, Challengers chronicles the rise and fall of the former tennis protégé Tashi (Zendaya). A bright future was ahead of her before an injury derailed her career as a professional tennis player, forcing her to turn to coaching instead.

She poured all her energy into helping her husband Art (Mike Faist) become a Grand Slam champion. Once he finds himself in a rut, Tashi decides to sign him up for a low-level event to gain back his confidence, but it turns out he won’t get an easy win because his former best friend and Tashi’s ex Patrick (Josh O’Connor) is also playing.

R-rated original films usually struggle to make a mark at the box office, but that didn’t stop Challengers from serving up a win with a $15 million opening. In addition to topping the domestic box office, it earned $10 million outside of North America.

Challengers was initially slated for the world premiere at the Venice Film Festival last year before shifting its release date to April 26, 2024, due to dual strikes in Hollywood.

For All Mankind took us deep into space over the course of its first four seasons, and there’s more where that came from! Apple TV+ renewed this space race series for its fifth season, in addition to ordering a new spin-off Star City, set in the same universe.

For All Mankind is set in the alternative universe where the United States failed to become the first nation to land the man on the Moon. This eventually led to them losing the space race and changed the course of history as we know it.

In addition to renewing For All Mankind, also ordered a spin-off Star City, described as “a propulsive paranoid thriller” about the Soviet cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence officers who won the space race in this alt-history retelling.

Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi co-created Star City with Ronald D. Moore, after their fascination with the Soviet space program grew while they were working on For All Mankind.

“The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race,” said the duo in a statement.

The Matrix Resurrections revived this iconic sci-fi franchise, and the fifth installment is on the way. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter Drew Goddard is developing the new sequel for Warner Bros, which will mark the first Matrix movie not directed by Lana Wachowski.

Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros Motion Pictures’ president of production, said they’re honored to join forces with Goddard and see him add his vision to the Matrix canon.

“Drew came to Warner Bros with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” said Ehrman in a statement.

Despite not directing the next Matrix film, the original co-writer and co-director Lana Wachowski will be back as one of its executive producers. She revived the franchise with The Matrix Resurrections in 2021, which marked the first film in this series to be directed solely by her.

Goddard’s new take is still in the early stages of development, so it remains unclear how it connects to the original franchise. We also don’t know if any of the core cast members, including Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, and Laurence Fishburne, will be back for this sequel.

The creative partnership between Emma Stone and Yorgos Lanthimos is a gift that keeps on giving, and they’re gearing up to release another film together. Searchlight Pictures dropped the first trailer for Lanthimos’ anthology film Kinds of Kindness, and Stone leads its A-list cast.

Kinds of Kindness is a triptych fable that chronicles the journey of three different characters. We’ll follow a story of a man trying to take control of his own life, a policeman whose wife seems to be a different person after being lost at sea and coming back home, and a woman who’s trying to find a special individual who’s destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

Kinds of Kindness will reunite Stone with her frequent collaborator Yorgos Lanthimos, following the success of their most recent collaboration Poor Things, which won Stone her second Oscar. This film also marks the reunion between Lanthimos and screenwriter Efthimis Filippou, who also co-wrote his films The Lobster and Killing of a Sacred Deer

This film will also star several of Lanthimos’ past collaborators, including Poor Things’ Willem Dafoe and Margaret Qualley and The Favourite’s Joe Alwyn. Hong Chau (The Whale), Mamoudou Athie (Archive 81), and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) also star.

Kinds of Kindness will hit the theatres on June 21 via Searchlight Pictures.
