Aretha Franklin hand-picked Jennifer Hudson to play her before passing away in 2018. The Oscar-winning actress told Sunday Today that her only goal is to honor the famous singer, and that’s she’s hoping she’ll make her proud and do her justice.
After several delays, Respect is expected to premiere on December 25th. It will also star Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Queen Latifah, and Mary J. Blige

]]>Hudson announced she wrapped the production on Respect by sharing a photo from the set, and describing how important this project is to her.
“Too overwhelmed to get into it right now but words can’t express how grateful I am to be chosen by the queen herself and to live out yet another dream! It was my honor, to honor the Queen’s request!” wrote the actress on Instagram.
In addition to being handpicked by the Queen of Soul herself to play her in a biopic, Jennifer Hudson also sang the timeless hit “Amazing Grace” at Franklin’s funeral in 2018.
Respect is scheduled to come out on October 9th, and it will also star Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, and Mary J. Blige.

]]>Hudson stars as the queen of soul in the forthcoming biopic titled Respect.
The minute-long clip from MGM gives us a very short first sneak peek to the Grammy and Oscar-winning singer singing a verse from the title song nearly a cappella. Hudson was handpicked for the role by Franklin herself who passed away more than a year ago at 76 years old.
“Much R.E.S.P.E.C.T to the queen of soul,” Hudson tweeted alongside the teaser on Friday.
The Liesl Tommy-directed film also stars Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Marc Maron, Tituss Burgess, Saycon Sengbloh, Hailey Kilgore, Tate Donovan, Heather Headley, Skye Dakota Turner, and Mary J. Blige.

She then landed the role of Effie White in Dreamgirls, delivering a critically acclaimed performance which brought her roles in movies like Sex and the City, Winnie Mandela, and Monster. Hudson found success in the music world as well, with her debut album Jennifer Hudson receiving a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. She obviously has the talent required for the role of Aretha Franklin.
Aretha Franklin is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with over 75 million records sold during her 60 years long career. She won a total of 18 Grammy Award including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1994 and was also the first performer to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Franklin recorded 41 studio albums, with 2014s Aretha Franklin Sings the Great Diva Classics, on which she covered ten famous female artist songs, being most recent one.
