Guillermo del Toro psychological thriller Nightmare Alley starring Cate Blanchett and Bradley Cooper has released its first trailer.

Based on William Lindsay Gresham’s 1946 novel of the same name, Nightmare Alley follows Stan Carlisle (Cooper), a carney who excels at manipulating people with a few words, who meets psychiatrist Dr. Lilith Ritter, who’s even more dangerous.

Also starring in the film are Willem Dafoe, Toni Collette, Richard Jenkins, Ron Perlman, Rooney Mara, Holt McCallany, Tim Blake Nelson, Mary Steenburgen, David Strathairn, Clifton Collins Jr., Jim Beaver, Mark Povinelli, David Hewlett, Romina Power, and Paul Anderson.

Del Toro and Kim Morgan wrote the movie and J. Miles Dale produced with del Toro.

This marks del Toro’s first time behind the camera since 2018’s The Shape of Water, for which he won Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. Nightmare Alley is a departure from his normal works as there are no supernatural elements.

“Now is the first chance I have to do a real underbelly of society type of movie,” del Toro told Collider in 2019. “[There are] no supernatural elements. Just a straight, really dark story.”

The film is being released in theaters on December 17. Check out the trailer below.

The period drama Armageddon Time has added Robert De Niro, Oscar Isaac, Donald Sutherland, and Anne Hathaway to the cast.

In May, Variety reported that Cate Blanchett would be starring in the film and that James Gray would be directing. Armageddon Time is a coming-of-age story that looks at friendship and loyalty during the Ronald Reagan era. The film is based off of Gray’s childhood memories.

“I’m anxious to make something that is very much about people, about human emotions and interactions between people, and I want it to be filled with warmth and tenderness. In some sense, yes it’s about my childhood, but an illustration of familial love really on every level. I’m of the belief that most people do their best and that they try their best under difficult circumstances and in some sense that’s a beautiful thing and very moving to me,” Gray said when describing the film to Deadline.

This won’t be De Niro and Hathaway’s first time working together, they starred in the 2015 comedy The Intern. De Niro is working with Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s next movie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Hathaway currently stars in Warner Bros’ The Witches.

The Board of Directors of the Biennale di Venezia has appointed Cate Blanchett President of this year’s Venice Film Festival jury.

The Oscar-winning actress will be the eighth woman to preside over the jury.

“Every year I look expectantly to the selection at Venice and every year it is surprising and distinct,” Blanchett said in a statement. “Venice is one of the most atmospheric film festivals in the world –- a celebration of the provocative and inspirational medium that is cinema in all its forms. It is a privilege and a pleasure to be this year’s jury president.”

“Cate Blanchett is not just an icon of contemporary cinema, courted by the greatest directors of the past twenty years and adored by moviegoers of every kind,” said Festival head Alberto Barbera. “Her commitment in the artistic and humanitarian fields and to the protection of the environment, as well as her defense of the emancipation of women in a film industry still coming to terms with male prejudice, have made her an inspiration for society as a whole. Fox’s acclaimed animated comedy has tapped Cate Blanchett and David Harbour for guest roles.

The two-time Oscar winner and Stranger Things star are set to lend their voices to future episodes of The Simpsons.

According to Entertainment Weekly, it’s fair to assume that Blanchett will make an appearance in the season 31 finale voicing a canine psychologist named Elaine who agrees to help Santa’s Little Helper, who is suffering from depression.

“She determines if there’s a trauma in his past that they have to go solve, which actually goes back to the first episode of the series,” Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told the outlet, adding that fans will experience “a callback that is older than the internet.”

Harbour, on the other hand, will pop up in a season 32 episode as an alternate version of Mr. Burns.

“Like Mission: Impossible, they give him a whole new body and face and voice so that these people in the plant won’t possibly recognize him,” shares Jean. “He’s supposed to be a blue-collar guy from another part of the plant, but everything he says is like Mr. Burns. He wants to go to karaoke and sing songs from the 1890s, but the guys don’t see through it.”

Cate Blanchett is in talks to star opposite  Bradley Cooper in Guillermo del Toro‘s Nightmare Alley.

Multiple outlets report that A-lister is in negotiations to join the Oscar-winning director’s adaptation of the 1946 novel by William Lindsay Gresham. This isn’t the first time the story is being adapted for the big screen — it was previously made into a film in 1947 starring actor Tyrone Power.

Del Toro will direct the pic from a script he co-wrote with Kim Morgan. The film is also produced and financed by del Toro and J. Miles Dale with TSG Entertainment.

Nightmare Alley follows a young con-man who joins a traveling carnival and finds himself teaming up with a female psychiatrist who is even more corrupt than he is. Things get complicated when she ends up out-manipulating the manipulator.

Nightmare Alley is Oscar winner del Toro’s follow-up to The Shape of Water, which won Best Picture. The film is Cooper’s first role since A Star is Born.

The women are sticking together.

Last week, Captain Marvel actress, Brie Larson, became the recipient of the Crystal Award for Excellence in Film at the Women in Film Crystal + Lucy Awards.

During her acceptance speech, the 28-year-old used the opportunity to highlight the lack of diversity amongst film critics.

According to a study by the University of Southern California, almost 80% of critics are male, while women of color represent just 2.5% of the field.

“Am I saying that I hate white dudes? No, I am not,” stated the Oscar winner. “But if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color there is an insanely low chance that a woman of color would get to see that movie… I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him. I want to know what it meant to women of color, to biracial women, to teen women of color, to teens that are biracial.”

Her sentiments have now been echoed by fellow Best Actress winners, Cate Blanchett and Sandra Bullock.

“A studio can support a film and it’s the invisible faces on the internet, and often male reviewers, who can view it through a prism of misunderstanding. I think that is a really big part of the equation,” lamented the Aussie actress; while her Ocean’s 8 co-star said, “It would be nice if reviewers reflected who the film is for like children should review children’s films, not a 60-year-old man. I guess his opinion would be kind of skewed.”
